The world has turned upside down or has it? With COVID we now have to evaluate whom we can trust to be safe. Who will truly take all precautions, follow all protocols? Who will make just the slightest mistake, become infected, and then endanger our lives? Parents worry that their children will endanger them or themselves. COVID had become not only a health issue but also a political rift.
Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year followed by the longest night. It gives us plenty of time to turn inward and evaluate, to look at others, but more importantly to look at ourselves. It’s a time to be honest with the self. In this morass of the pandemic we’ve come to be more isolated, more alone. It isn’t safe to expose ourselves too much to others, but do we now summon the courage to look at ourselves? Who are we sans the usual social pressure?
Delving deeply is not an easy enterprise. We risk finding someone we’ve long left behind, but with whom we have unfinished business. Old issues may be touched upon again and we may find ourselves unfinished. That can be exhausting, but it can also be a source of renewal. As the Solstice brings new light, shedding new light within, reigniting fires, may be just what we need to bring us through these difficult times.
