DIE Twilight!

Mar 19, 2009 12:27

Just when I cracked a smile about Twilight going to DVD so quickly, the news crews decide to show us the mile-long lines of 12-year-old white girls screaming over the DVD release.

WHY?!  GARRRRR!!!  I realize that when you are young, you don't realize just how dark or sinister your programmed entertainment really is.  Like Pee Wee's Playhouse.  That show was an utter delight to the eight-year-old Meg.  Now, in my 20s, creepy as all flighty f**k, am I right?  Or the Coraline movie.  Watching it now, I can easily see the numerous sinister overtones that would be lost on its supposed target audience.  And in the case of Twilight, where the evil comes from the creepy, abusive, unhealthily co-dependent relationship, I can see how young girls might miss the creepy, abusive, unhealthy codependent relationship parts of it and instead read: "This is a tantalizing, forbidden love story with delightful supernatural elements, with a main character I can totally pretend to be."  The problem lies in the fact that whether or not these factors are registering with the fans, it is subconsciously teaching them horrible, horrible, unhealthy, self-destructive behavior, and it's giving them entirely the wrong idea of what love is supposed to be!

If you're reading this, you've probably read my previous thoughts about Twilight.  Here, or on DevArt --> rowen-silver.deviantart.com/journal/21806204/.  I cannot rail enough against this brain-warping series.

Don't misunderstand me, though.  I'm not necessarily hating on all of it.  I don't hate the backstory, her take on the vampires, even her take on the werewolves.  EVEN the stupid sparkling.  That was all salvageable.  It is the main relationship, the driving force behind the series, that deserves some serious kill-it-with-fire mob action.  If someone else took all her backstory and rewrote the whole damn thing with a decent pair of characters...

oh, and some good writing...

then it would have been a redeemable series, probably have been just as popular, and I would have no problem sitting back and watching the preteens amass.

BUT NO!  IT EXISTS, AND IT JUST WON'T DIE!!!  I DON'T WANT TO LIVE IN A WORLD FILLED WITH WOMEN WHO WERE RAISED ON THESE BOOKS AND MOVIES!

I wanna cry.

twilight must die
