I just volunteered to do Thursday and Friday mornings (9-12) at an op-shop near me - and am slightly overwhelmed by the force of Nice Caring Older Ladies. I can't decide whether they are all very proper only sometimes they pretend not to be, or they are not very proper but feel they should be. In any case I don't think I could possibly stand doing it all the time, because they kind of numb the mind a little (I don't mean to be patronising; it's probably just because most of the people I know of that age are friends of my parents/teachers, who were all hippies in the 60s/70s and wear sarongs all over the place and cure politicians and have lots of books. Maybe it's culture shock, not age difference.)
In any case, at least now I can put "charity work" on my resume.
Edit: haha, one of them also told me I had to wear "longer shorts" in the shop :P. I didn't know whether to defend myself (it's freaking hot out and most of my stuff is in the wash) or pretend to be a bored, condescending teenager. Such dilemmas usually resolve themselves as "Um...ok."
