This weekend, I went to South Padre Island for my aunt Carol's retirement surprise party. She just retired from 19 years of teaching, so some of her former students decided to throw her a party. I generally dislike the beach, but it was kind of enjoyable this time. I actually brought some shorts this time, and between that and the light/white shirts I bought upon my arrival, it made being outside a lot more comfortable, though it was still pretty hot and muggy.
The party itself went pretty well. She didn't have a clue what was going on until she arrived. The food wasn't that great, though. It was almost all sea food, which I'm really not a fan of. Even aside from that, none of it looked especially great anyway. At $30 a head, the food should have been a lot better. The view was nice, though. The sea and sky were beautiful, and there was a really cute redhead there who I kept sneaking quick glances at. And no, she's not some high school girl. I think she's actually a few years older than I am. She never so much as looked in my general direction, though, so I didn't say anything to her. I saw her on Facebook the next day via her "liking" my aunt's comment about the party. I considered befriending her, but I decided against it. I don't want to change her opinion of one of her most beloved former teachers to, "Mrs. Fatherree was great! She had a weird and kind of creepy nephew, though." I think she's from Austin, anyway. This is just reaffirming my theory that I won't likely find another decent girl until I move somewhere further north. Oh yeah, some kid got his head stuck in the foot rest of a table at Louie's, where the event took place. The staff was sweating bullets trying to get him out, even though he was fine the whole time. Then, right after they got him out and left, he almost did the same thing again.
Later that night, I went for a walk on the beach with my mom, my youngest sister, and her dad. It was nice, and walking along barefoot with shorts on, I realized that the beach can actually be pretty nice for just being a bunch of sand and water, especially at night. Everything I dislike about the beach: the overbearing brightness and heat from the sun, the subsequent inability to walk around barefoot without barbecuing your feet, the leagues of loud and obnoxious people, are absent from the beach at night. We were out for about an hour and a half, and when everyone else went back to the beach house, I stayed out there for about another hour or so. I walked around. I sat and stared at the sea. I lied on the ground and stared at the sky. It was really nice, and I felt a peace that is usually pretty absent from my life. I already want to go back to do that again.
When I got back to the beach house, Eric (my cousin Elizabeth's husband) and Desi (my other cousin, sister to the aforementioned) were sitting around outside, so I talked to them for a while. I wish I got to see them more often. I only get to see that part of my family maybe a few times a year.
I had managed to avoid sunburn all weekend (unlike my sister Haley, who got thoroughly roasted in the time span of about two hours and was mostly bedridden for a couple days from it), but on the drive home, I decided to roll the windows down for the first bit of the drive. It wasn't long, but it was enough to burn my left arm.
Upon returning home, it took about half an hour for the negative energy to build back up and give me a headache. At least I got a break for a couple days, though.
