I had a beautiful hike yesterday afternoon at Harriman Park, at the time Kat was having her garden party for a dozen or so of her friends in our backyard. Kat was fine with me leaving, and Sally and Lizzy went to Manhattan to a Bastille Day (a day early!:) festival. So it was a good time to be out in the woods! :)
I had just gotten off the roadway to discover I was on a false trail, when I heard some leaves crunching not far away. I thought it did not sound like another hiker, and I was right! It was a young deer. I spoke out loud so as to give it the opportunity to make a graceful exit, but I saw it peering thorough some mountain laurel bushes at me, and it did not seem overly concerned. In fact it went on about its business, as did I. How nice to be regarded as just another forest animal, one who is not particularly dangerous and can be safely ignored! :)
And later as I was leaving my hike I saw a beautiful yellow swallowtail butterfly flying about 5 feet over my head, and I turned my face up to see, and the butterfly swooped down to get a closer look and came fairly close (I was wearing insect repellent)! How nice to have my face considered as a possible flower, although I can tell you I don't personally believe it looked much like a flower! ;)
