Back Seat Talk

Mar 22, 2008 23:24

I drove Lizzy and two of her friends to see a movie, and then picked them up when it was over.

The three girls sat in the back seat, and chatted like I was not there.  So of course I kept an ear open as I drove, interested in what 14 and 15-year old girls might find interesting.  And of course they knew I was there, so nothing they said was a secret.

Emily started making a bit of fun of Nicole, whom I figured out had a new boyfriend (a Junior!) of about a week.  Emily was saying that she felt uncomfortable if the two of them "did that" while she was present (they apparently all hang out in Emily's basement and watch TV).

Nicole said she was happy Emily was there so she could act as a buffer while she got to know her new boyfriend better.

Emily said that she would be uncomfortable if they started "doing that", and she would not like that.

Nicole said she had waited her whole life for this, and here it might just happen!

I didn't say anything, but just kept a close ear on this conversation!

Finally it became clear that Nicole was talking about anticipating her first kiss with a boy!  And Emily was uncomfortable if they started to kiss "and be romantic" while she was present!

How precious is that!  What a unique moment in a young person's life, and I felt sort of privileged to be sort-of-present at this conversation!  :)
