Desktop Kwestion

I'm doing up the reward art for the Kickstarter, part of which is a desktop image.  What are the standard pixel dimentions for a desktop or wallpaper image?
Does it matter what the DPI is?  Should it be JPG, TIF or something else?  Imquiring minds want to know.
