When
you’ re a child
The
little boy was running. He ran until his legs couldn’t bring him
any further and then stopped. Heavily panting, he could feel
strangled sobs down his throat but he didn’t want to release them.
‘Be
strong baby, it’s gonna be alright’ he kept saying those words,
his mom’s words, to himself.
He
couldn’t be so sure that things would be alright, still he had no
choice but to believe. Down on his knees he stared blankly at the
empty street, fighting his tears and he heard someone calling for
him.
‘Yoseob-ah!’
hurried steps came closer and someone put him back on his feet. ‘You
can’t run away like this, understand?’ the middle-aged woman said
in a failed attempt to be friendly to the seven year-old boy.
He
barely nodded and let her lead him to the building he was escaping
from moments earlier. The reason why he was running wasn’t clear,
not even for Yoseob himself. It’d been two days since he was taken
away from home, from everything he had always known, taken away from
her. As most of others young boys, his mother was Yoseob’ s world.
Everything revolved around her. Their bond was even stronger that she
was the only human being he ever had in his life. Yoseob never had a
father like other children, he rarely felt the need to have one
though because she was there.
The
little boy wasn’t stupid. He knew his mother had some troubles. She
kept on meeting wrong guys, getting wrong jobs, drinking wrong
stuffs, but one thing she did right : loving her son. And Yoseob, as
any other kid, had an undying faith in her.
The
middle-aged woman settled him in the room he had been sitting all
day, he was supposed to play, to draw, do whatever he wanted
basically. However, all little Yoseob wanted was to see his mother.
He had a list of things he wanted to say to her. He thought about it
for two long days but his mother didn’t seem to come and inch by
inch, the little boy was losing his faith.
‘You
don’t wanna go and play with other kids Yoseob-ah?’ the same lady
asked.
Still
looking through the window he just shook his head. He’ll wait.
Until she comes, he’ll wait.
‘I
wanna see my mom first’ he said and she sighed.
‘I
know you do. But you know that she might not be able to come, right?’
she asked with a worried look.
‘I
know the judge will decide, but why would he take her away from me?’
suddenly he looked at her. The very second the boy had looked in her
eyes, two days ago, she had noticed it. They were not childish eyes
any more. He was a smart kid, but still a kid who probably grew up
too fast each time he had to pick his drunk mother off of the floor.
She felt bad for him, she always did, with every kid she met. There
was nothing she could to convince him and she just turned on her
heels and left.
Yoseob
waited about three more hours, immobile and then he saw her. She was
stepping out of a car and he rushed towards the front door, ran down
the stairs, a smile on his face as she was only feet away. She knelt
down on the pavement allowing him to bury his head in her neck. His
little hands fisting his mom’s shirt while she was endlessly
kissing his head.
‘I’m
so sorry baby’ she said and tears streamed down her face. ‘I wish
I was a better mom for you’
She
was hugging him so tight Yoseob couldn’t understand how things
could possibly be bad. After a while she pulled back and cupped his
face with her hands.
‘I
have to leave for a while’ she started and his eyes darkened. She
was leaving, that was it. ‘but Seobie baby I promise I won’t let
you down, alright?’ and all the poor boy could do was to nod.
The
man who drove the car put his hand on her shoulder.
‘It’s
time to go’ he just said and both mother and child winced.
The
woman stood up and took a step back. By reflex Yoseob caught her hand
with both of his and he pleaded.
‘Mom,
wait. Please don’t go’ he was crying. All the tears he had fought
since the very first day went pouring down. ‘I swear I’ll be
good. I’ll do my homework and my chores and...’ suddenly he
couldn’t remember what he had put on the list, everything went
blank, as if he knew that was no use to plead. It was too late.
‘I
love you baby’
She
kissed his hands, and climbed into the car. She sent her son a kiss
in the air, her whole body violently shaking with her sobs and the
car was gone.
Yoseob
stood there for a while staring at the empty spot where the car was
parked earlier. His world just crashed down, it was a lot to take in.
When he finally turned around he noticed a boy sitting on the steps
that lead to the front door. He was looking at him quite
expressionless. Yoseob hesitantly stepped forward, looking at the
floor, his tears silently falling to his chin.
‘You
shouldn’t be crying’ the boy finally spoke and Yoseob lifted his
head and looked at him.
‘Why
do you care?’ Yoseob tried to sound harsh but only managed to be
weak. The other shrugged.
‘She
obviously loves you. At least, she’ll be back’ he stated.
Yoseob
sat down next to the other. It was the first time he spoke with
someone here. He sniffled and used his sleeve to dry his cheeks. He
knew he probably shouldn’t ask but curiosity was too strong.
‘W-what
about yours?’ he stuttered.
‘Never
minded to meet me’ the boy just replied and Yoseob frowned.
‘You...
You don’t know her?’
‘Nope.
I guess she wasn’t interested’ his tone was steady but Yoseob
could see the pained look on the other’ s face. No matter what he
said, the boy cared and he was hurt that his own mother never wanted
to meet him. Who wouldn’t be?
‘Too
bad for her’ the little one said.
Yoseob
didn’t think as he put his hand over the other’ s that was
resting on the concrete stair. He didn’t know why but this boy’ s
eyes were somewhat reassuring. The other seemed surprised by the
younger’ s action but laced their fingers together and smiled
shyly. It felt good having someone by his side. For the first time in
a while, Yoseob smiled back. A huge, beautiful, sparkling smile and
the other boy’ s breath was caught up in his throat. All of a
sudden, things weren’t that bad anymore. As long as you have
someone the share the burden with, everything is alright, Yoseob felt
it.
The
front door opened and the Lady appeared behind them. She lifted her
brows when she saw them together.
‘Seobie-ah,
are you alright?’
Yoseob
turned his head and nodded, smiling. She was taken off guards.
‘Do
you want to come inside, I have to tell you about host families if
you-’ she started but Yoseob spoke up.
‘Actually,
I’d rather stay here if I can’ he said biting his lip. He was
looking at the boy next to him and they both smiled shyly to each
other, a bit confused about what they were feeling.
The
woman stared down at them for a while but then she smiled, relieved.
Both of them were quite lonely. She knew the older since he was a
baby, never had a family on his own, he had always lived here. It’s
been eight years but he never spoke with other children, always in
his own little world. She had had the feeling that Yoseob would be as
lonely as he was, and here she was proven wrong.
‘It’s
okay, you can stay here as long as you want. But you and Doojoonie
should get inside though’ she chuckled.
The
two boys stood up and headed inside, Doojoon holding a tight grip on
Yoseob’ s hand. She watched them disappear in the corridor, a warm
feeling in her chest. She felt like she didn’t have to worry for
them anymore.
Maybe
these two were meant to be, she thought.
