For those of you that doubted that Starbucks is evil - and you really shouldn't, although I know that a few of you out there still cling to the touching and naïve belief that Starbucks is only thinking of the Good of Us All - let me assure you that we have found positive proof otherwise this morning:
I have orange syrup in my coffee.
Those of you who have known me for any length of time know that I hate the flavour of oranges. Hate, hate, hate. I am also not fond of: regular oranges (I will eat the occasional tangerine), orange cookies, Sunkist (auugh), orange juice in smoothies, orange chews, orange candies, or even - this may shock you - orange with chocolate. Adding to the fun, pure oranges and orange juice make my knees and finger joints swell up. About the only time I can tolerate, much less want, the taste of orange is when I'm fighting off a cold.
(I know. As a Florida resident, confessing any of this is tantamount to treason. But I cannot lie to any of you. If it helps my Florida residency any, I don't mind pink grapefruit - I can't eat it frequently because of the joint swelling, but it doesn't make me recoil.)
I have just one exception to this: Creamsicles. Why I adore Creamsicles when all other forms of orange flavours turn my stomach, I cannot tell you. But there you have it. Which is why I allowed myself to taste Starbucks Orange Crème drink. As I've related, I've received multiple variations on this drink - some utterly delightful, some not - and one where orange and vanilla syrups were added to my latte.
Hmm.
On an impulse, I bought some orange and vanilla syrup. And this morning, watched by a interested cat wondering when my interest would move from coffee to scratching his chin, I dribbled in some orange syrup to the coffee, stirred, sat down at the computer, and took a sip.
And it's actually -
-- hesitates before actually typing this, admitting this openly to the planet -
Good.
This home is still safely secure from a single genuine orange, though.
