A Short Survey for Fanfic Readers and Writers, Esp Within the FFXII Fandom

Oct 20, 2007 10:08

Here are just a few survey questions about reading and writing fanfic (especially within the FFXII fandom) that I’d like to toss out at my f-list and any kind people who might have wandered by. I'm merely asking these questions out of curiosity so you needn't worry about ending up in, say, a thesis paper anytime soon. ;) And please feel free to ( Read more... )

General Questions for Writers:

1. Once upon a time I posted something every two weeks. If I was working on a big project, I'd post a chapter of that, plus something else. Now...hahahaha, I haven't written anything in months.

2. Yes. During my very creative periods, when I'm posting daily, definitely.

3. Only when I'm in one of my super-creative times. Like I said, I have periods where I'll post every day for a month, and then others where I'll have a dry spell that lasts for two or three months. Because of these dry spells, people often take some time to notice that I've started writing again.

4. I don't know that I'm quite prolific enough in any one category to have gotten pigeonholed...unless as a Sanzo/Gojyo writer for the Saiyuki fandom. But I'm not all that interested in breaking free of that mold...I like the couple too much to want to break them up.

General Questions for Readers:

5. Oh, yes. Sometimes I try to be critical and nice, but there are other friends who could and would make my life an unhappy place should I ( ... )

1. Do you have a set schedule for when you post up fic? (Every few days, every weekend, every two weeks, etc.)

I do not. I write fic when fic asks me to write it, and post when I think the section or story is done.

2. Do you ever compare the amount of feedback you receive for your fics against the amount of feedback another fic-writer receives?

I do, yes, but mostly from the standpoint of the nature of the fic. My more academic writing, like Adamantoise, the crossovers, and my more adventurous or potentially squicking stuff, like O Captain and To Margaret, tend to go overlooked in relation to the more accessible writing. In this regard I also compare to other authors, who aren't doing this whole Ivalice Cataclysm thing. I've pretty much accepted that my writing is hit-or-miss with the bulk of my readers.

3. Do you ever get envious of the popularity of another fic-writer?

Yes. But I think it's always a case of "this person is cool and we have similar interests, but I don't want to be that fangirl, so I'll just lurk".

4. Have ( ... )

9. Do you have a favorite writer within the FFXII? Who is it?

I do not. I think we're a solid community and there are many authors whose work I trust. And even the authors whose style I like the most have things that I don't like about their writing. So I have no favorite author, but am fishing in a small pond of very large sturgeon.

...Actually, I might. mullenkamp and moonsheen. But they are very very small, for large sturgeons. ::smiles:: This is probably because they do the whole "I am the Ivalice your Ivalice you shall have no other Ivalices before me" thing. But when I read FFXII fic, what I really WANT is the FFXII-FFT-VS progression and the complete world.

10. Do you have a least favorite? Have you ever expressed than opinion to anyone?

The thing is, I avoid the communities that produce the fic I would dislike. I've discerned which authors I don't want to read, and so I don't read them. Summaries are very useful for this.

11. Do you feel as though there is a definite and popular “in group” within the fandom, consisting of the fandom's ( ... )
