A Short Survey for Fanfic Readers and Writers, Esp Within the FFXII Fandom
Here are just a few survey questions about reading and writing fanfic (especially within the FFXII fandom) that I’d like to toss out at my f-list and any kind people who might have wandered by. 1. Do you have a set schedule for when you post up fic? No, it's whenever the mood strikes (and something's completed). Which is actually a problem for me when I'm writing multichaptered stuff - because I'm impulsive and procrastinating (which is why I have many unfinished stories).
2. Do you ever compare the amount of feedback you receive for your fics against the amount of feedback another fic-writer receives? Not against any specific writers, but sometimes I am surprised that stories I've written that I've really been proud of don't get as much feedback as something else I've written.
3. Do you ever get envious of the popularity of another fic-writer? Not really. I have pretty much stayed with one pairing (which I'll address in 4) so I don't feel like I'm competing against the entirety of the fandom for attention.
4. Have you ever been pigeon-holed as writer for a particular pairing or character or genre? (The Balthier/Ashe writer, the angst writer, the Larsa writer, etc.) If so, do you consciously play up that stereotype of your writing or do you try to buck it? I'm Balthier/Ashe because it's the ship that interests me the most. I guess I play it up since it's what I almost exclusively write. I will read other pairings but I struggle when it comes to writing them. I guess that either makes me ridiculously loyal to Balthier/Ashe...or really boring and uncreative :)!
5. Have you ever wanted to leave negative feedback for a fic a friend has written? Have you gone through with it or desisted? I'm a total coward and could probably never go through with it. I'd probably be more likely to anonymously flame my own work than someone else's because...sigh, I want everyone to love me :)
6. Have you ever gotten in to the habit of reading a particular person’s writing but not commenting on it, no matter how much you might enjoy it? In the Balthier/Ashe community, I try to leave some comment for every darn thing that gets posted. Everything. But I've read some things with other pairings (Basch/Vossler and Drace/Gabranth in particular) that I've been almost intimidated to comment on. I freeze up and have trouble expressing what I liked about stories since the writers in those pairings are extraordinary and I don't want to just leave a "LOVED IT" message
7. Are you more apt to comment on a fanfic if you have a personal relationship with the author than when you do not? I'm apt to leave more personalized comments since half the time I've known the story was in the works :)
8. Have you ever commented favorably on a fic you didn’t particularly enjoy primarily because you knew the author? Hehe, guilty!
8. Do you have a favorite writer within the FFXII? Who is it? Yes, but I'd rather not say.
9. Do you have a least favorite? Have you ever expressed than opinion to anyone? I don't. I just choose which pairings to read and ignore stories that don't interest me.
