In case of zombie apocalypse...

The older boy has problems with falling asleep. However, now that he's older, he's getting a better handle on what he needs to do.

The past couple nights, though, he has pushed staying up a little past his normal bed time and has had difficulty falling asleep. This morning, he got up to have breakfast and then went back to bed for a while, making him late for school.

I'd read recently about how staying up late can cause your body to release cortisol, which can make insomnia worse. This lead to the following discussion on the way to school:

Me: "Do you suddenly get a boost of energy right before bed?"
Him: "Sometimes."
Me: "Maybe you should try going to bed 1/2 hour to an hour earlier. I've heard that if you don't go to bed on time, your body releases cortisol to keep you awake."
Him: "Ah. I bet your body thinks there must be a very good reason for you still being up, so it does that to give you extra energy."
Me: "Yeah, but if you don't need it, it just makes it hard to sleep. I sometimes have the same problem."
Him: "I'll try that. However, if there's a zombie apocalypse, then that will be a good thing. At least we know we can stay awake until we get away from the zombies."

Glad he's starting to think about the important things in life.
