Just a small part tonight. Don't know if I'll be posting tomorrow. I read something last night, that threw me and I cannot seem to shake this feeling of being caught between being hurt and getting angry. The problem is, that I cannot seem to put my finger on what is bugging me so much about it. It wasn't about me and I shouldn't feel hurt... besides I assume the person wouldn't want to hurt me. Still... It makes me unable to focus on writing at the moment. I therefore have no idea if there will be a chapter tomorrow... :(

Marea.

NEARING THE END OF MAY 2008
*****
Three days after Connie fell to her death, Nora still has not completely recuperated from the shock. It had all been so hectic, so frantic. Looking back, she realizes, she had been lucky that Max had been there when it happened. The police had made it very easy on her, because of Max’s good reputation.
Max had talked with his colleagues and he had tried to protect the children, where he could. Wally had given his statement that matched those of the children and Max, so there was a quick consent that this was a sudden tragic death, but an accidental one. And with the police gone, Nora was glad to have her house back.
All this time, Kevin had not left her side and he had given her advice upon advice. Of course, she had to do some serious explaining. Her children had been shocked to discover they had a half-brother, but, in general, their anger had been directed at their father and not at Ryan and that fact had given Nora enough confidence to introduce her children to Connie’s son.
And the situation had been as awkward as could be expected. Especially when Kevin, forever the cynic, had wondered out loud if perhaps Ryan should undergo some DNA-test to make sure he was William’s. Just when everyone had opened their mouths to shut him up, Ryan had said that he would want it too, to find out the truth, once and for all.
Fortunately, Max had also been the one who had contacted George Lafferty to talk to him about his wife. It had been a very difficult conversation, with a man who lived so much in his own world, that the lives of his daughter and step-son had passed him by, without him even noticing. He had been shocked by what Max had told him and, filled with guilt, he had immediately come to his children’s side.
Which means that, now, she sits at her kitchen-table, waiting for George Lafferty to come back inside from the garden where he talks privately with Ryan and Elizabeth.
All three faces are very serious. She knows what George is proposing to them. Elizabeth has to finish her school-year and therefore has to return to Ojai, but for the time being, rather than go back to their old house, where they had lived with Connie and had such bad memories, both Elizabeth and Ryan will stay with Holly and Rebecca.
“Ryan, Nora feels a responsibility towards you,..” George explains. “She firmly believes that you are William’s son and, therefore, you have the right to be a member of the Walker family and their inheritance… She also knows that you won’t go far away from Beth and she also wants you, Ryan, to finish your education.
We had a long talk last night. And she has convinced to not quit my job right now, to take care of you two. She proposes that I continue to work and let you continue in the rhythm you’re used to as well. With Mrs Harper willing to keep an eye on you, for the time being, I know you will both be safe.
Once the school-holidays starts, you and Beth can stay with Nora and get to know your half-siblings and see where this leads us and what decisions need to be taken by then. This is all sudden for me as well and I need, just like you two, some time and space to adjust.
I know I was not the best father to Beth or step-father to you, Ryan. I always believed all the bad things that your mother told me about you, which is why I was so tough on you. Now, I have to set my mind too, to the fact that I’ve been lied to all this time during my marriage… I feel like such a fool….”
Beth takes Ryan’s hand, as if to find approval and Ryan calmly replies:
“Beth continuing her education is the most important aspect for me in all this... I will adjust to anything to make that happen… She is the most important person in my life.” George smiles as his huge hands cover those of Beth and Ryan.

Sarah cannot be more surprised, then when she opens the front door to see a familiar face standing before her.
“Noah!” she says in shock.
“Hello, Sarah.” Noah replies shyly. “Can I come in?”
“No, you cannot.” Sarah replies and she’s a bit amused to see, that this was not the answer Noah had been expecting. “Why are you here?”
“I came to tell you that I’ve been thinking about you all the time, I can’t get you off my mind. I know I broke up with you, but …. I miss you.”
“What about Trish?” Sarah asks.
“We are definitely through. We tried, but we couldn’t make it. Too much has happened.”
“Yeah, I know the feeling.”
“I could use a friend…?” Noah tries with a charming smile, but it doesn’t get returned by Sarah.
“My father died…”
“Yes, I heard… I wanted to call you, but Trish monitored everything I did..”
“It’s been a rocky road, these last few weeks… I could have used a friend of my own…”
“I’m sorry….”
“…. And I had one. Someone who stood right beside me, even though it was over the phone, most of the time.... Joe. ...Joe was right there for me.” Sarah’s voice is calm and sweet, conversational. She’s not angry with Noah, but just stopped caring about him and his marriage as well.
At that moment, she sees Joe come back from taking the children to school. Joe stops halfway his greet, when he’s aware of someone standing in front of his door and an familiar feeling of being unimportant to Sarah comes back full force, when he realizes it’s Noah. But then Sarah smiles at him…
“Noah was just here to talk, he needs a friend now that he and his wife have split up…”
“Oh.” Joe says, still doubting.
“…But I fear I can’t help him… And now, he is going to leave… Permanently..” She emphasizes as she lets Joe in and closes the door on Noah.
