HALFWAY APRIL 2008 - THE SATURDAYNIGHT WILLIAM DIED.
*****

After today, Jason has every intention to simply walk into his brother’s office and tell him he’s gay. But, as usual, when Jason enters Robert’s house there is this familiar feeling of being smothered, of never being accepted if he would know the truth, making Jason pretend to be someone that he really isn’t.

This used to be the house of their father, but when he died, he left almost everything to Robert, for who he saw a brilliant future in politics. Their father however had no interest in Jason and his religion, feeling that dedicating your life to church and sheltering others was a waste of time and money.

Walking up the familiar stairs, Jason tries to gather some courage to tell his brother the truth. And he prays that Robert will understand. In front of Robert’s large office he can see his hand shake, before he can turn it into fist to knock on the door.
“Come in.” He can hear Robert say.

The moment he enters the room, he knows tonight is not the night to tell Robert anything. Uncle Jack is here and so are their cousins John and Larry. Great! Homophobes united. So he paints on his smile and listens how Robert boasts about firing an intern for being gay.

After the regular ‘joke’ on how Uncle Jack wouldn’t want to bend over to pick something off the floor with some gay man around, for heaven knows, what would happen then and then some more anti-gay remarks that Uncle Jack’s words inspire, Jason’s courage shrivels up even further.

The only thing that can still make him smile is imagining Jordan’s face at Uncle Jack’s words and hear him say that no self-respecting gay man would want to do anything with Uncle Jack, no matter how desperate and lonely the man would be. He looks at the other men in the room and feels excluded even more.

An hour later Jason feels desperate enough to stammer a goodbye, saying he needs to be in church and he flees the house, never feeling more lonely then he does now, but as he parks his car, just outside the church, he knows that tonight he won’t find salvation there. He needs something else and he knows it.

He picks up the piece of paper that’s been burning in his pocket since Chad gave it to him. He plays with it, turns and twists it around in his fingers until he comes to a decision. He grabs his cell-phone and after one last caress of his thumb over the numbers, he dials.

Chad is about as bored as he can get. Sure, it’s a big party, lots of people from the porn-industry. He recognizes the starlets and the big names. He recognizes those who can make you and those who can break you, those who are safe and those who are shady at best. He’s been in this business long enough, maybe even too long.

He had to be here to meet with a producer, that he wanted to talk to, but with that done, he is left watching the party turning into the standard debauchery these parties are known for and that Chad no longer cares for. There was a time, when he hadn’t mind ending up in bed with one or two men or women, but he feels he has outgrown that.

He is about to think of a valid reason to leave, when he feels his phone ring. He’s surprised when he sees it’s an unknown number. There are not that many people who have this special number, but he picks up nonetheless.
“Hello?”

“Ch.. Chad? It’s .. ah… It’s Jason McCallister…” He hears softly on the other side.
“Oh, hi, Jason. I didn’t recognize your number.” Chad smiles. “I’m glad you decided to call me…” Glad? Baffled would be more like it.
“Chad? I …. I need someone to talk to… I no longer know what to do…”

“Jase, honey, where are you?” Chad is alarmed by the defeated sound of Jason’s voice.
“Near my church… I can’t go in… I can’t do it anymore.” Chad can hear Jason’s sob clearly on the phone and wipes his face.

“Jason? .. Remember where I dropped you off?” Jason makes an affirmative sound. “Go there. I’ll be there as soon as possible. Wait for me, will you?” And while he quickly goes over to his car, he wonders if he should call Kevin and Scotty, but then changes his mind. They have enough on their plate without adding and in-the-closest-priest-with-a-Republican-senator-as-a-brother.

The taps of Emily’s feet on the asphalt are steady. Her mp3-player gives her the right beat to run to. She grins at the thought that Nora would see her like this. She would keel over dead. Fact is that Emily began running two years ago. Just a few miles. Just to get rid of the excess energy she sometimes feels.

In a way she’s a very lazy person at day time, but at night, with it’s fresher air, the joy of running under a blanket of stars makes her feel alive. It helps her to clear her thoughts and, boy, do they need clearing up. Images of a furious William, Nora’s anger, Holly’s hatred and Kevin’s hurt followed by his contempt are still on her mind.

She hears a car coming up behind her. This is a quiet back-way. She hardly ever sees anyone else, so she’s not really afraid either. She looks over her shoulder and moves to the right to let the car pass. It drives way too fast and Emily coughs at the dust the car stirs up.

“Freaking idiot…. Why drive so fast?” She mutters, a little worried when the car stops right before her. She’s suddenly aware she’s alone on an empty piece of road. Someone could kill her and no one would know where to start searching for her. She shivers at the thought, but then she hears a voice:

“Emily? Emily, is that really you?” Disbelief shows on Emily’s face.
“Nora?” she asks.
“I… was on my way to see you and I took a wrong turn and … suddenly I see you here… Jogging?...” Nora is amazed and Emily grins wickedly.

“Big mistake.” Emily laughs. “Drive me back and I’ll get you a glass of wine.”
“Bribe gets you everywhere.” Nora jokes in return, but when Emily sees Nora’s eyes in the light, she doesn’t need much time to realize that Nora’s face is smiling, but inside she’s crying. She grabs Nora’s hand for a second and squeezes it in support.

With Emily giving directions they quickly end up at Emily’s house and Emily walks up to her front-door, while Nora parks the car. But when Emily approaches the door she’s surprised to see someone sitting there. A blond head lifts up as Emily approaches.
“Holly?”

“I was halfway on my way to see William. I have a shot-gun in my car… I wanted to kill him.” Holly says through her tears. “But I couldn’t do that…. I know I can’t kill him.”
“No…” replies Emily relieved. “That is illegal… And think of what it would do to Rebecca.” Emily’s calm and sober voice helps Holly.

Holly nods, but then quickly wipes away her tears as she sees Nora coming closer.
“I’m sorry…. I didn’t realize…. Naturally, you should be here for Nora… I’m just…” Holly flaps her hand indicating that she’s looking for a quick retreat, but Nora stops her.
“Please, don’t go, Holly. You shouldn’t be alone. And me neither… I think we need each other.”

Emily watches the two women with growing surprise. They are both proud, smart women and it dawns on her that if those two would put their heads together, William would be even in bigger trouble. Not that Emily would mind. She’s actually more than eager to fan the flames…

“What?!” Kitty stares at Warren and Warren nods with a big smile.
“It’s true and official. Our first guest for ‘Red, White and Blue - Hollywood” will be Robert McCallister. Should be right up your alley. Republican, Anti-everything and fanatically so, and though he’s a Senator now, there’s a persistent rumour that he wants to become Governor.

And after he rules California, he wants to rule America by becoming president. Lord help us if that ever happens,… we’ll go back to medieval times.” Warren replies sarcastically. Kitty shrugs, not believing things can turn out that bad. She watches the file before her. Does she have to read all that?

“It will be shot next Friday. Be prepared.” Warren replies curtly, before bending over to her. “And now that we know this… How about we get to know each other even better?”
But Kitty smiles sweetly and replies.
“Sorry, I need to be ‘prepared’, so I’m snuggling up to this strong file and a hot… cup of coco.”

And on those words she leaves the office. Like Kevin, work always brings her distraction and she came here to use her head for something else than worrying about her family and Warren surprisingly delivered her something incredible. She knows of Senator Robert McCallister. Handsome, arrogant, politically unmovable.

She can’t wait to interview him. She makes a face. Alright, she has to do this with Warren, but she’s sure that between the two of them and Robert McCallister, there will be enough chemistry to create fire-works. She can’t wait for Friday and she’s so busy with the questions in her head, that she forgets all about her family.
