I saw Patti Smith perform earlier today! My goodness, what a goddess! She was fab. I don't know how someone can smile so much, yet still be so intimidating. She's truly an American Spirit. And Lenny, what an excellent guitarist he is. He can't sing, but he's like the Sonny Bono of punk/new wave -- he's so charming you don't care that he can't sing.
Lenny spotted me from the stage and waved and we smiled at each other quite a bit. They did a lot of great songs: Break it Up (I never heard them do this live before); Gloria; Dancing Barefoot; Summer Cannibals; People Have The Power; Free Money; new songs, etc. The audience was a good one too. A wonderful time had by all.
I was lucky to get a seat pretty close to the stage, but I stood the entire time dancing. After "Dancing Barefoot" a boy about 13 or 14 with braces said to me, "You have all the moves." I said, "Thank-you." He said, "Can I dance with you the next song?" I said, "Sure" figuring it was harmless, he's just a kid. Then he said, "We'll dance to a fast song, because if we dance to a slow song, I'll squeeze you too tight."
Whoa.
Okay, make that, he's just a smartass kid. I mean, he couldn't have been hitting on me. Could he?
And I thought it would be jerky to say, "No I don't want to dance with you" to a kid. Especially after seeing Patti go up to all the young kids in the audience and shake their hands. How could I not dance with a kid? My grandmother would be mad at me if I didn't. She'd call me a "dumb fuck" or something if I disappointed a kid. "What'd you say 'no' for, you dumb fuck, he's just a kid."
So, "People Have The Power" was on and I'm dancing with this kid, thinking it's all cute and innocent. Next thing I know, he's grinding against me.
I yelled at him, "Don't do that!" I was totally creeped out. So, I left right after "People Have The Power" and watched the rest of the songs at a safe distance away from Hormone Boy.
After the concert, I saw this really cute guy who reminded me of my friend George in High School. We were staring at each other, so I said, "George?" He said, "No." I said, "I'm sorry you look like someone I know." He said something cute like, "I could be George if you want me to."
I told him I knew him from somewhere. He looked so familiar.
We started talking for a good 15 minutes. He introduced me to his friends too. We talked a lot about what's going on in New York as far as bands and a music scene. He said he'd like to see me DJ and we decided to hang out sometime.
We exchanged phone numbers and I noticed he put down his full name with his phone number.
So, guess who it was?!
Frank I______ from BLONDIE!!! He's so cute and cool!!
This was definitely a happy day to remember.
