Rememberance Day

Nov 11, 2006 19:14

Each year I write about it and each year the significance of it wanes. But I write about it becuase it means something to me. When I see the poppies I recall 'In Flander Field' by Dr. Col. John McCrae.

It has come to symolize the horrors of war and to honour the war dead. But originally it also had reference to continuing the fight against the enemy.

I think for the past few years I reprint it here and this year is no exception. Listen, if you have never read the poem. PLEASE take the time and read it this time:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
