So I know it's a little silly, but I take immense satisfaction from small domestic tasks. I just finished making a pot of stock from the carcass of the turkey I roasted yesterday. 8 1/2 hours of intermittant nurturing and I now have food where there once was trash. I'm cooking a turkey today. Why? Because it sounded like fun and turkey is 60 cents a pound. Can't beat that. So my house smells like turkey and sage. Yum. I'm tempted to make Alton Brown's sweet potato waffles, but I don't think the boys will eat them.

I have finished the collar and the eyelets on the brown bliaut. They became progressively less retarded-monkey-like until the last few are actually rather nice. The hem will go pretty quickly and the cuffs, while always fiddly, are small. My obsession with hand finishing is bizarre ( Read more... )

This batch of bread has set up much better than the last batch which I was not totally happy with. HusbandMan likes the denser bread but it's not *right*. I could tell when I was kneading it that this round would be better and it's rising nicely. I am almost certain that the issue was with the temperature of the water I dissolved the yeast in. Dinner seemed to be a success. HusbandMan got home before the guests after all which was fantastic. People were late due to traffic and lost issues but everyone except Merlin ate everything. Merlin avoided the potatoes and didn't have squash but he was apparently partial to the bread I baked. Memo to self: Do an extra bake when we're having guests ( Read more... )

PSA: A five pound pot roast, eight small potatoes and one large onion will, in fact, fit into an average Crock-pot but you've got to be really committed to the venture.
