Sometimes I just can't seem to get enough foreign sports coverage. I know that sounds odd, but seriously, I cannot be the only fan of Aussie Rules Football and English Premier League Football (soccer to the USA) here in America, right?
The Grand Final of the AFL season (Super Bowl of Aussie Rules) occurred around midnight Saturday morning. Fox Soccer Channel carried it live. Seeing as I had an early night for once, I decided to record it directly to my computer to watch it later. Next morning I wake to find the game took up 18gb of space on my computer...not only that, but it was just about the best Grand Final in the sport's history. Final margin was 4 points, and the Sydney Swans, who hadn't won the title in seventy-some-odd years, managed to pull out the victory over the West Coast Eagles. Sydney is like Aussie Rules' Red Sox. By the way, their fight song uses the same music as Notre Dame's fight song (just thought I'd throw that in there). If you ever get a chance to watch a game of Aussie Rules, do so. Otherwise just ask to borrow the DVDs I made of it. Yeah, I made a 3 disc set of the 2005 Aussie Rules Grand Final...wanna fight about it. It was 18 gigs for JJ Geiger's sake (before editing that is).
Secondly, my favorite soccer team is struggling. Man U cannot get it going at home. Rooney is suspended for the next two games in Champions League play (I told you he is the British Ron Artest) and Ronaldo takes a dive every time he's hit by a gust of wind. On top of that, Premier League-leading Chelsea is pulling away from the rest of the field at an alarming rate (7-0-0, 5 pt lead over 2nd place, 13 goal difference against their opponents). It's gonna be hard for the Red Devils to stay close if we keep up the current level of play. Blackburn even got their first win at Old Trafford (Man U's home pitch, or stadium) in over 40 years. I'm telling you, this is all Malcolm Glazer's fault. The Tampa Bay Bucs owner buys the franchise and it goes straight into the crapper.
Oh well, at least the NBA season is not too far away. I'm looking forward to see the Pacers make their first run at a title without Reggie. We made some good moves in the off-season. Drafting Granger was great, but I think getting Sarunas Jasikevicius was absolutely huge. Let the mangling of the Lithuanian Larry Bird's name by Hoosiers begin.
Well that's about it for now. Time to play some more Name That Tune for money, aka do my job.
