DW 6x01: The Impossible Astronaut

Well, I was blown away.

I definitely didn't expect either the beginning nor the ending.

They were both rather brave and very strong, upsetting choices. We've got an episode that starts with the Doctor's death- not a nice death, a very cold and ruthless death. And the funeral; that is what makes it real. Generally in fiction people who die might get bloody deaths, but everything after is very clinical and very clean, but in what is a family show to bring in the gasoline and to make the characters take care of it- it's so cold and it makes it a lot more real to deal with. And of course it means that you can't bring that body back with some lame excuse.

I really liked the monsters. It is quite scary, especially for the viewer, who keeps screaming to the characters about what is standing behind them (or was that just me?). The poor woman in the restroom's death was awful and again- very cold. I'm really hoping they didn't kill Rory again, it takes a lot to be the new Captain Jack.

I guessed Amy's pregnancy from the moment she felt a bit sick (though that's to do with the monsters, but that's what I first thought). But how shocking it is to have a character confess a pregnancy and shoot a kid in the same minute. Too bad that the Next Time trailer ruins the sheer shock and terror I was under right then, but it was terrible and shocking. It's a children's show, how likely are we to see stuff like that in a show marketed to children?

I did accused Moffat of bringing the show down a level, and aiming it more to children. This is a 360 degrees turn. That was for adults. I'm really impressed.

There'll be a better review of both episodes after I watch the second part of the two parter.

I would like to thank Hannibal the capper who got the pdtv version out less than ten minutes after transmission was over. It must be a record.

On a sadder note, I liked the Lis Sladen tribute. As I watched all the interviews I marvelled that they managed to get all these people and to get this done in a couple of days. It was quite sweet and gosh I cried and it just dawned on me how much more I'm going to cry every time I'll watch the series 4 finale (I mean 4x12 and 4x13, not the Specials). It's so sad.
