Smocking!
I was making the Simplicity pirate shirt for my brother and decided to experiment with smocking. The pattern calls for gathers as the neck, shoulder, and wrist, so I replaced the shoulder gathers with a little bit of smocking.

Yes, I know how to do all of two different smocking stitches.
I couldn't entirely get the penciled pleating dots out of the fabric even after a machine washing and scrubbing with a nail brush and hand wash detergent, but hopefully they won't show much with the voluminous fabric of the sleeve and will fade over time.
Hopefully I can get a photo of the finished product this weekend.
