I spent my first full day in California last week in San Francisco. I had a lot of good food and saw some wonderful architecture. There are seriously streets where all the houses look less like places where real people live, and more like something out of a fantasy land inhabited by lively characters in whimsical costumes. It was rainy and foggy all day, but I didn't care.
I got to see
this exhibit at the Legion of Honor museum. It was absolutely amazing! The artist re-created various historic garments using only paper and paint. There were yards and yards of lens-cleaning paper involved and what she did with corrugated cardboard to make lace was inspired - thin cross-sections of multi-ply cardboard used to create alternative bands of straight strips and wiggly strips... That description doesn't do it justice, but trust me, it was cool. We also got to hear a performance on the museum's symphonic organ, which is built into the center of the building with the pipes hidden behind walls that look like cut stone but are actually painted fabric (once of these is a half dome, even).
Meanwhile, back home, it's getting horribly muddy and everything that isn't mud is covered in wet, dead leaves.
Yesterday, while cleaning greasy build-up on top of my (bizarrely shaped) range, I discovered there there is a built-in fluorescent light that illuminates the stove top. It only took me five years to notice!
