Ok, so I went out to take some pictures of our handiwork
So I planted several kinds of tulips in this bed and re-mulched it, so hopefully they'll come up in the spring (along with the columbine I planted this year. The soil in this bed was so dry it was like sand, so we just replaced it with potting soil. This could explain why everything I planted pretty much up and died. We also have a massive ant colony in there, so I put traps out. Normally I wouldn't mind but a) I don't need them in the house and b) the fuckers bite.
This is where I planted the irises. This morning I found half (exactly half) of them dug up and laying next to the hole I planted. Whatever dug them up didn't even eat them. I replanted them and we'll just have to see how many come up in the spring.
I mulched around this tree. The roots are all exposed but I didn't want to do too much because we're going to eventually just take it down. It's growing into the power lines. Anyway, hopefully the mulch will keep the poison ivy from growing there (it's supposed to kill weeds but I'm not sure how smart the mulch is compared to the poison ivy) and if nothing else it reduces the need to mow around that area. Eventually I want to turn that entire area into a tiered garden with a medium-sized tree in the corner by the road and just avoid mowing the entire area. But that takes more skill and more patience than I have.
This is another bed I made. The entire area was covered in forsythia and other weeds, so it took quite a while to clear it all out. I know it looks like I half-assed it, but I figure that since I need to re-mulch in the spring and that area in the back is all dead anyway, I'll just leave it until I plant new stuff next year.
Here is where I am going to try to plant a garden. I've ordered a 2 x 4 box from Square Foot Gardening to put in this corner. This is one of the few southern exposed parts of the yard that isn't covered in forsythia or under a huge tree. I also think that it will be difficult for the deer to get up there.
And this is our back yard and what will be our project for next year. The first picture is from earlier this year and the second one was taken today after a summer or constant rain and no sun making its way back there.
Oh yeah, that's pathetic. We bought seed for a shade-loving grass and will put that down this fall. At some point we want to put a patio in the corner next to the mud room. I'm going to try to plant some shade-loving bushes along the back. Basically I just want to reduce the amount of actual grass back there as much as possible.
And just to prove we don't entirely suck, here is our gloriously clean, spider-free, and organized mud room.
