So, i rear ended a retired judge yesterday. I was coasting behind him while we were at a traffic light and I nudged his bumper. It was really stupid since I had gotten distracted by something on my car floor and wasn't paying attention to where the car in front of me was. I got out and looked at the bumpers. There was absolutely not apparent damage. Seriously, not even a scratch! So I went up to the guy's window and saw he was on the phone. I asked him if he wanted to look at his bumper but he said he wasn't getting out of the car until the police arrived. So we waited for the police officer, who was a young slightly unorganized man, who came and talked to us. At first he told me that since there wasn't any damage he wasn't going to file a crash report and give me a ticket. He was just going to have us swap insurance info and leave. Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Turns out the man in the car was a much older gentleman with a history of Parkinson's and he said that while he wasn't worried about the car damage, he claimed he wasn't feeling too good. He must have hit his head on the back of the seat and gotten a jolt out of it because he was purple in the face and shaking a lot (also, possible signs of Parkinson's). The police officer decided that he better cover his own ass (which was the smart thing to do) and called an ambulance to take a look at him. In order to do this, he had to file the crash report and give me a $400 ticket for 'not maintaining proper distance behind a vehicle'. The older gentleman refused the EMT's services and we were all free to go. The police officer told me I could plead guilty on the ticket and pay the fine or I could contest the ticket in court. If I just paid the ticket, the older gentleman could use that against me if he tried to sue me. However, if I went to court, even if I was found guilty, he could not use that against me in a civil suit. I talked to my father, who is a lawyer, and he told me to go to the court hearing and gave me a rough idea what to say to the judge. I'm not too worried about that part, but I am concerned about the older gentleman. He is probably okay, but just in case, I filed a claim with my insurance anyway. Not sure who the ambulance is going to charge, if its me, my insurance will definitely cover it. Later that night, after I went to go hang out with Sunny and Chris, I got a call from the cop, who had forgotten to write down some of the older gentleman's information. Really, I'm mostly nervous about what this cop is going to say, if he shows up in court. He was kind of flaky, but he seemed to want to pacify the situation as much as possible. We'll see how that goes.
Today I was made of fail. I felt horrible about my accident the day before and I proceeded to fail at everything I did today. I got lost while trying to pick up food for me and my coworkers and got really frustrated. When I finally found the place I got the food then on the way back I spilled my side dish all over my car floor because some pedestrian meandered out into the road in front of me and I had to slam on my brakes in order to not hit him. Fucker. Then I forgot all about an important phone conference and had to send out an apology letter to my supervisor at headquarters with some made up excuse (the excuse actually came from my campus supervisor, so I felt a bit better about it). Oh man, the past few days have sucked. Phewwwwwwww.
