So, my sister had her baby yesterday. I drove down on Saturday, not expecting the baby until monday or tuesday. However, my sister really wanted to have the baby over the weekend so she wouldn't have to go into work on Monday so she did everything in her power to induce labor early. Walking is supposed to help with labor, so we took at two mile walk. Castor oil, a kind of laxative, is supposed to upset the bowels and cause labor to happen earlier, so she had a couple tablespoons of that. Spicy food is also supposed to help, so we ate a huge meal at a very tasty Indian restaurant. Lo, and behold, 6am the next morning my sister went to the hospital and after only 12 hours of labor gave birth to ______. He looked like a cute mixture of a smurf and yoda, but pink.
Beth and Omar hadn't picked out a suitable name yet for the child by the time it was born. They had a list of 40 some names, some of them I posted on this journal earlier. The strongest contestants were Viktor, Peter, and Vaughn. Beth tried to push Edwin through at the end but it got shut down. I kept suggesting Serge, which I think is a really awesome name. I asked Lachlan (aged 3) what the baby should be called and he said 'WRCT Pittsburg!' which apparently his favorite radio station. It was hella cute.
To make a long story short, the baby ended up being named Owain, pronounced like Owen but spelled funny. The main reason being that he LOOKS like an Owain. All the other names just fell away from him. The only way Beth and Omar could come to a decision was looking the baby in the face and realizing that this child was already an Owen, just not in name yet. Owain was on the list of baby names I posted earlier and it was one of the better options.
So I've been hanging out with the kids, watching them, playing with them, and making them food. Omar was around today but I had them all to myself on Sunday. It was a nice day. We played outside a lot, played some Uno, put together a puzzle, watched some Muppets, watched them play video games for a bit, good easy baby sitting times. Ivan and Lachlan are well trained kids and are mostly very obedient. Beth tried to give me some money to compensate my 'efforts' but seriously, these kids are pretty great. It was a super easy job.
Yesterday I made some vegetarian chicken noodle soup with the chicken flavoring and seitan I found around the house then pieroges for dinner. Tonight was an exciting experiment with Hungarian dumplings, which we fucked up by putting alfredo sauce on. I'm still kind of nauseous from that. The kids loved it though. Seriously, you just need to serve them with gravy, anything else and they're kind of horrible.
Tomorrow Beth comes back from the hospital. Then... I dunno. Maybe I'll head back to Cleveland. Maybe I'll chill here for another day. Whatever. We'll see what happens.
