Delusional Hippie Syndrome can go by a lot of other names: "delusional Anarchist Syndrome," "Delusional Environmentalist Syndrome," "Delusional Altruist Syndrome," and so on. You can actually find this syndrome in many movie from the last 3-5 decades or so, with the theme - usually, that this is a problem which must be fixed or eliminated. To make way for Yuppiefest Destiny. Yet, it seems largely to transformed, in society at least, into Delusional Woke Syndrome.
A person doesn't have to be a registered hippie in order to suffer from DHS. He or she just has to strongly identify with some of the tenets. And, those would mainly be that people are basically good, that the earth must be saved, that capitalism is inherently bad, that religions are bad, that expressive creativity is the ultimate definition of a person, that peace and love shall and must conquer all, and so forth. These mainly follow from modern liberal ideology, which has been the playground of Democrat and Labour parties for many decades. But, some of them, like insistent independence, and live-and-let-live, stem from more classical liberalism. This would be the difference between Delusional Anarchist Syndrome and Delusional Libertarian Syndrome.
All of these tend to be a kind of fundamentalism. Lars perhaps had Delusional Fundamentalist Syndrome, but many altruistic hippies, etc., might easilly relate to where he was coming from.
As in the case of Lars, it isn't a true delusion unless it interferes with a person's life or functionality in society. But, first, who to say if it does or not, especially if one's life is so, "out there." And, then, who's to say that it is a delusion? So, this is a theme in many movies - Who says that the hippie's lifestyle or belief system is harmful to self or others? Outrageous circumstance or misfortune? Society? Friends or family? Sometimes, it is society which is the problem. Sometimes it is the family. Sometimes it really is capitalism. On the other hand, DHS can become so extreme - as in incubator cities like SF - that it turns into violent and divisive wokism, an exact antithesis of liberalism, which is how fundamentalisms act whenever you take them to their psycho-logical conclusions.
We already saw, in, "The Glass Castle," how DHS grew, along with alcoholism, as a real mental illness, because it truly interfered with the functionality of the family's life in society and in reality, leading to homelessness. But it did not go quietly, and many would argue that these people were still fine, living better than our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and having fun at it. Well, the the flying-monkey type of temptation, to argue thus.
In, "Captain Fantastic," below, it takes an outsider relative to insist that the hippie's vehemently independent lifestyle is harmful.... But this is done with more nuance and relativity - again, who's to say? And, there's the rub. That's what makes this a good theme for movies. Who says that Alexander Supertramp was on the wrong course or not - even if he ended up dying because of his DHS? Who's to say if Manson really was such a great harm?
In, "Our Idiot Brother," it ends up largely being the sisters who are at fault, along with society, because they all turned their backs on the simple, easy ideals of hippiedom. And their brother wasn't really such an idiot, after all. Or, do you see it differently. That's what makes these movies interesting, especially as society has been shifting from the Baby Boomers to a world where we all eat each other alive, pert much, I reckon.
Many of these movies are ensemble works, maybe since the theme is pretty basic. Some of these movies are about cults.
All the idiot brother had to do was find the right mate and then he could fit into a society which supposedly lets everyone be everyone. Like that town in Oregon where everybody was fine with the male mayor growing boobs. Don't believe it. The world usually doesn't work that way. Most of the world is not upscale Liberalville, USA, which can't even accept the illegal immigrants it once enticed.
And, maybe there is a wide-scale social problem, in this age, where everyone has become so cynical, because everyone has become entirely convinced that the ideals of hippiedom are inherently naive and unworkable. This can be another kind of mental illness. Possibly related to Trump Derangement Syndrome.
