Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Here's what should be a Christmas Classic, and one of my favs.  Edward Scissorhands.  For one thing, it really represents the theme to which I have hued in this journal, "Wisdom is the retention of innocence through adversity."  Few movies say that better than, "E.S."  Next, it is one of those movies where an innocent person is falsely accused, which are movies that I like.  And, while showing Edward as something horrible yet something actually very good, it often shows that society looks very good but can be very horrible.  It's a, "beauty and the beast," love story.  It's a gothic horror movie, yet comedic at times.  It's a satire and social critique.  It's sci-fi.  One of my all-time favourite movies.  And you can see why I might be running it after, "Charly," etc..

In this movie, Edward does have a mental illness - but it is depicted as a mechanical problem, something over which he has little control, at least within normative society.  So, his scissor hands actually are a stand in for an inability to interact with society, similar to Lars, in the last movie.  And all his scarring, inadequacies and alienation represent the loneliness of someone who has been suffering from some metal illness.  And, I would say that - although the author might not have seen this - if Edward's mechanical issues were a real psychological condition, it would probably be the result of neglect from grandiose, narcissistic parents.

In the movie, his "parent" is a crazy scientist, who's caring was so errant that it could be considered abusive - just as someone who splices a human with a monkey is being abusive.

And Edward carries down some of this narcissism, in his own capacity to destroy whatever he touches, but he clearly struggles to get away from that, and be the empath that he has always been inside, thus conquering the parents/illness.  The question is, can a person like this ever find full love in a largely narcissistic society, and I think that I am a good example of how the answer to that question might be, "Not often."  (More has been written about this movie in this journal, which can be found via tags page or by doing a search).

Notice how society insists in making a monster out of Edward - an inevitable transference of their own monstrosity?  Seeking to purge its own sins?  That's what was attempted to be done to me within the last two years or so.  And that's part of what is behind the current WEF et al conspiracy's depopulation mission.

So, I think this movie remains extremely relevant today, as more and more people in the world unfortunately become broken and abused.  As mad scientists either try to kill them, or turn them into bio-techno-entities, which they are not.  And people try to purge themselves of the misbegotten ugliness within.  The sin.
