The difference a year makes

LJ has been sending me notices telling me that my paid account expires early next week, and begging me to renew. That means it's been a year since I upgraded to a paid account in support of LJ against the DoS attacks by Russian goons. I now have no desire to renew.

The biggest factor is learning that LJ will make up reasons for terminating accounts. Their ToS says they can terminate an account for any reason, but trust in a service depends on their not using their arbitrary latitude arbitrarily. When they do, I may continue to use the service, but I won't give it money.

Then there was the Scrapbook "upgrade." This rendered the rather large collection of images which I'd posted useless.

The traffic on my F-list has declined significantly in the past year, so clearly other people that I know are also dissatisfied with LJ, whether or not it's for the same reason.

My primary venue for talking about ideas is now my blog. For the rest, I'm using a variety of channels (which emphatically don't include Facebook). Dreamwidth really hasn't taken off for the circle of people I know. For businesses purposes I'm on LinkedIn. I post interesting links on Twitter, but it's useless for expressing thoughts deeper than a slogan or having a conversation. And, of course, there are old-fashioned channels such as email and (gasp) conversation.

Actually, not having all my eggs in one basket isn't such a bad idea.
