apparently it's not swimmer's ear; they're not sure what it is. I went to the PCC health center and they said they better not touch it, and sent me to a Kaiser center. I went there and the doctor nervously chipped at the scab of blood to see if my ear drum was ok and he could just wash out my ear. But apparently the scab is basically on my ear drum, because each attempt at chipping it produced involuntary tears and convulsions of pain and it didn't seem safe to continue. He prescribed some medication that's supposed to soften up the scab as well as kill any bacteria possibly causing it, and I have a follow up appointment on Thursday. It feels a little scary, and it's certainly distracting to go around with one ear plugged. Everything sounds a little more distant and it's hard to hear when people talk on my left side. when it's quiet, the silence in my left ear feels like TV static.
