"Your sister's been avoiding me." Yuto said as he lied to his back by the school field.
"No shit, Sherlock." Yuri said in English. Yuto rolled his eyes at him.
"Care to explain why?" He asked.
Yuri shrugged. "Wouldn't know. Maybe she just simply hates you."
"Thank you, Captain Obvious." Yuto said. "I expected she wouldn't avoid me though. I had the impression she would choose fight rather than flight. Why is she avoiding me? Is she avoiding you?"
"Nope." Yuri said. "Actually, we always study together at home. She always asks me about English homework and stuffs."
"She can ask me..." Yuto said.
"Wouldn't you love that?" Yuri said, exasperated.
Yuto shrugged. "More chances to annoy her."
"If you love to annoy her, what do you have against her avoiding you out of sheer hatred?"
"It's not the same. I didn't know what I did to receive the glares. I would have appreciate it better is I did." Yuto said with a grin.
"You're sick." Yuri said, shaking his head, and frownng at his friend. He didn't really like to see him like that.
Yuto raised a brow at him and sat up. "Why are you suddenly being overprotective of your sister?"
"I'm not, you numbskull. I'm just being normal. I don’t get why you’re suddenly acting like a jerk. Normally, you wouldn't get a girl by making her hate you, you know."
"Yeah, you'd know." Yuto said with a smirk. Yuri glared at him. That was still a bit of a sore subject for him. Yuto ignored this, though.
"I don't exactly want to get under her pants. I just want to get under her skin." Yuto said, offhandedly.
"I seriously didn't need the image, dude." Yuri groaned.
Just then, Yuto's phone rang. He took it out and smiled.
"Zack?" Yuri asked, knowingly.
"Yup." Yuto said. "He's out of St. Theresa's." He said.
Yuri smiled, as well. "That's great."
“This calls for a celebration!” Yuto cheered. That was when someone very familiar walked by.
Shinju, holding some books, has just exited the library and was passing by the corridor just adjacent to the field where Yuri and Yuto were.
Yuri sharply turned to Yuto and mentally groaned as he saw his smirk.
“Your sister’s such a bookworm.” He commented, watching her.
“Yeah, I think she'd rather marry a book than you.” Yuri said seriously.
Yuri felt more helpless when Yuto laughed at his comment. Suddenly, the older guy crouched down to his bag and started taking out a pen and a piece of paper.
Yuri raised a brow at him in question. Yuto, in turned, grinned gleefully and said, “Wait here.”
“Yuto, don’t. You two still have to go to that business party after this.” Yuri warned.
“Don’t worry about that!” Yuto said with a mischievous grin.
As Yuto ran, trying to catch up with Shinju, Yuri couldn’t help but wince and mentally berate himself for not trying hard to stop his friend.
-
“Sayuri!” Someone called and Shinju’s heart started pounding. Of course she knew that voice, and really, who else would call her Sayuri?
She started rushing, hoping she’ll lose him. She didn’t really want to see him or talk to him, nor have anything to do with him. She had been avoiding him ever since Umika talked to her.
What Umika said… it kept replaying in Shinju’s mind. Her words make her feel confused, angry, miserable… She just doesn’t know what to think anymore.
“Sayuri!” Yuto called once more and now his voice was much much nearer.
Shinju sighed, knowing full well she had no chance to escape him now.
She moved to turn to him, but before she could, he patted her hard on his back. She didn’t even know he was already at her back.
“Why have you been avoiding me, huh?” He suddenly asked.
Not really knowing if she should reply, she just settled for a glare and started walking once more.
She was surprised to hear him laugh. But she decided to ignore this.
“Niichan!” Someone suddenly said. Shinju reflexively looked back. She regretted it almost instantly.
A girl was running towards them, a familiar guy in tow. When they were close enough Shinju realized who the guy was. It was the same guy who covered for Yuto the other night. This must be that Ryutaro and the girl…
“Ka-kanon!” Yuto said looking at his little sister wide eyed. “What are you doing here?” He asked, sounding strangely panicky.
It was the first time Shinju saw her. She wasn’t in their engagement party or the party the other night. From what she remembered, they had said that she was still in America. She had come back to Japan, obviously.
“I wanted to visit you.” Kanon said, not smiling. “But what were you doing?” She said severely.
And surprisingly, she walked towards Shinju.
“I…” Shinju trailed off as Kanon snatched something from her back. It was a piece of paper with something written on it.
Realization dawned on Shinju as to what Yuto must have done. Mixed feelings, but mostly frustration and anger welled up on Shinju and she marched up to Yuto and slapped him.
And without another word, she ran away from them returning back to her sanctuary: the library.
Yuri sighed as he watched what was happening.
-
“History section?” Yuto said incredulously. “There are actual people who go there?”
“That’s exactly why.” Umika said through the phone. “You know how she’s a bit antisocial. Why are you looking for her, anyway?”
“Understatement of the year” Yuto muttered ignoring Umika’s question. “Okay, I got it. Thanks.” He said and hung up.
-
Shinju was startled when someone ungracefully flopped on the seat across her.
“What are you doing here?” Yuto said, sounding annoyed.
Shinju glared at him angrily. “That’s my question.” She said coldly.
There was a pause wherein Yuto sighed and took a glance at Shinju.
“Are… are you okay?” He asked very softly, raising his brows at her as if daring her to say she’s not.
Shinju growled in frustration. She just doesn’t understand him, but trying to keep her cool, she said.
“It’s none of your business anyway.”
“Of course it's my business. You're my fiancé.” He said automatically. And when he looked at her, Shinju was surprised to see real concern then.
Feeling more confused and frustrated than ever, Shinju grabbed her book and stomped out of the room.
Yuto watched her in surprised and equal confusion.
“Ugh!” He sounded, frustrated.
He grabbed his phone and started typing furiously. ‘She is such a weirdo! What is wrong with her?!’ He reflexively sent it to Zack.
Zack replied almost immediately.
‘Okay, what have you done this time?’
‘Why is it that you always assume it’s my fault?’
‘Well, it usually is.’
‘IHU.’
‘LOL. :P’
And somehow, Yuto was feeling better again. He sighed and stood up from his seat.
‘Just apologize. And stop harassing her, you jerk. Lil’s been telling me you’ve been awful to her.’ Another message came.
‘Whatever.’ Yuto typed and sent, frowning. He then returned his phone in his pocket. He took a deep breath to calm himself. He looked at the door for another few seconds and groaning, stood up and rushed out.
-
“Where is she? And where's Kanon?” Yuto said as he flopped down the seat besides Umika and Yuri
“Shinju?” Umika asked. “She already went home. She said she wasn’t feeling well.”
“Ryuu and Kanon already went back. Kanon needs to prepare soon. What happened?” Yuri asked him.
“She’s just stubborn. Didn’t even give me a chance to apologize.” Yuto said with a groan.
“What did you do this time?” Umika asked, surprised.
“You sound just like Zack.” Yuto muttered.
Umika looked perplexed. He sighed again, and stood up. “Well, I guess I better go. Good thing it’s only one class left.”
The two watched him go and when he was already gone, Umika turned to Yuri.
“What happened?” She asked.
“Just the usual.” Yuri said, shrugging. “He was being a jerk.”
Umika sighed, frowning. “Why is he like that with her anyway? He’s only like that with Shinju.”
Yuri frowned as well. “Defense mechanism.” He said.
“Hmm.” Umika said, understandingly. “And what happened next? Why is he actually trying to apologize??” She asked.
Yuri smirked at that. “Kanon-chan scolded him.”
-
Yuto can’t understand why he was feeling so nervous all of the sudden. Shaking his head, he raised his hand and pushed the door bell.
After a few seconds, the door opened. Somehow, Yuto felt a tad bit more nervous to see Kei, Shinju and Yuri’s niichan, there.
“Konnichiwa.” He greeted formally.
“Yuto-kun.” Kei said, looking pleasantly surprised. He smiled at him. “Konnichiwa.”
"I wanted to see Shinju-san, if it’s okay…” He said.
“Shinju? Isn’t she in school?” Kei asked, looking more surprised.
“She hasn’t gone home?” Yuto asked. “She’s not in school anymore. She said she wasn’t feeling well.”
Kei frowned and then suddenly he perked up. “She must be in the clubhouse…” He said, looking worried.
“Clubhouse?” Yuto asked. “Can you tell me where that is?”
-
Shinju sighed as she flopped down the sofa, holding her new book. After Keito had left, she hadn’t come to the clubhouse for a month. She eventually did. She knew the clubhouse was a property of Keito’s family, but Keito had given her a spare key and it doesn’t seem like they were planning to do anything to it. It looked the same as always. Just that sofa and a few other things inside.
She sighed again, now in content. She felt most comfortable in here. Flipping open her book, she started reading, slowly entering her own world.
“Ehh… this is a nice place.” Someone suddenly said and Shinju jumped.
She stood up, whirled around and gape seeing Yuto there.
“What are you doing here?” She as good as shrieked.
“I’m throwing that question back to you. You lied to Umika saying you were going home.” He said, frowning at her.
“Why do you care?” She asked angrily. “And don’t you dare say you’re my fiancé!”
Yuto looked at her and sighed, sitting slumping down the sofa.
“I’m sorry.” He muttered.
Shinju blinked. “What?”
“I said I’m sorry.” He said more loudly, rolling his eyes.
Shinju glared at him. “Since you don’t mean it, just don’t say it.”
“Why are you so difficult!?” Yuto asked frustratingly.
“I’m difficult?! How dare you!” Shinju cried. “You’re the one who started everything!”
“No.” Yuto said calmly. “You started this. I might have been the one who asked for this arranged marriage, but you’re the one who started this… whatever it is between us.”
Shinju glared at her, but was so stunned at what he said, she couldn’t say anything.
Yuto continued relentlessly. “You never really looked at me as a person from the start. You just thought I’m another means for your dad to ruin your life. It’s always been about you. And you would have never even thought twice about me if I hadn’t tried annoying you. Newsflash, the world doesn’t revolve around you. You’re not the only one hating this whole damn arrangement!”
Shinju stared at him, not really knowing what she felt about what he said.
They were quiet for a very long time, just staring at each other. Until Yuto sighed.
“I’m sorry okay.” He said tiredly. “About involving you into this, but I won’t back out on this engagement.”
There was another long pause and then suddenly, Shinju turned her back on him.
Yuto stood up, anger filling him. “That!” He said pointing. “That’s why you’re so difficult! You never listen to anyone!” Yuto said but abruptly stopped when he realized.
“A-are you crying?”
“No.” Shinju said quickly, but her voice cracked. She just felt so miserable right then. She still felt confused, more than anything, she didn’t know what to think of Yuto actually being there, her and Keito’s special place. And she felt guilty, as well, because she can’t deny what Yuto told her. She never really gave them a chance to at least be friends. From the start, she tried very hard to hate him even without reason, and to know that all he did was just to follow her up… And she felt so helpless because from the day her dad told her about this whole arrangement, she knew there was no way out. And Keito… she just wanted to be with Keito right now. She wanted to see him, to touch him. She wanted to hear his voice, soothing her, assuring her everything will be okay in the end.
She collapsed on the floor, she couldn’t stop her tears anymore. She have been bottling everything up, she finally exploded.
“Hey, don’t cry!” Yuto said, sounding panicky.
Shinju heard him approach her. She felt rather than saw her crouch down before her and for a second, Shinju felt a sort of déjà vu. The first time Keito saw her cry, it was exactly like this.
As if following a script, Shinju knew Yuto would just sit beside her, not touching her, just like Keito and she wasn’t mistaken. Yuto sat on the floor besides her as she cried her eyes out.
After a while though, Yuto suddenly sighed and hugged her.
“Shhh… Don’t cry. I’m sorry…” He whispered.
Shinju started crying again, and she was surprised herself when she said, “I’m so sorry.”
She felt Yuto shake his head, and continued telling her not to cry.
They stayed like that until Shinju finally calmed down, and then she awkwardly broke the hug.
Yuto looked away, seemingly embarrassed. “Sorry bout hugging you.” He muttered. “I didn’t know what to do, and when Kanon cry… well, sorry.”
Shinju just looked at the floor. She didn’t really know what to say.
Suddenly, Yuto was laughing. Shinju was surprised. It was the first time she saw him like that.
“You’re really like Lil.” He suddenly said in English. “Yappari, you’re Little Lily (Sayuri).”
Shinju looked at him, confused.
“So,” Yuto said, scratching his head. “Do you think we can do a do over?”
Shinju looked at him, frowning a bit. “Why… are you suddenly being nice?” She had to ask. She couldn’t help but still be wary of him.
Yuto sighed and said simply. “I’m tired. Aren’t you?”
Shinju looked down the floor and slowly nodded.
“So, truce?” He asked, offering a hand at her.
Cautiously, Shinju took it and nodded.
Suddenly, Yuto lied down there on the floor. “This is tiring. But yokatta.”
“Can you stop speaking in English?” Shinju asked, looking annoyed.
Yuto stared at her and started laughing. After a while, Shinju couldn’t help but join in as well.
But Shinju abruptly stopped and stood up. “It’s already five!” She said, panicking. “The party starts at four!”
“Shit.” Yuto said, and looking at each other once more, they dashed out and hurried back to Shinju’s house.
