Turns out today at work I found we had just bought a SATA to USB2 adaptor cable, which I brought home and used to recover all her files from the drive.

It turns out it really is a failing drive, as when I got it unmounted from the computer, and was holding it, I could feel/hear it clicking as it tried to start/mount the drive. I was able to drop it lightly a few times on the desk surface and it then 'engaged' and mounted on the desktop. I was able to copy her entire home folder off the drive onto another external firewire drive I have -- all 22,000+ files of around 54GB in just about 2 hours. About 10 minutes after I finished copying everything off the drive, it started clicking again and IO to it stopped again. *whew*

Ya, she needed USB2, because it was something she wanted to be able to take to labs to move her large files around (she's a biomedical photo major). Also cost was a concern...so she went USB2 only.

Firewire disk mode was a good suggestion, but I had to have the drive out to 'jar' it anyways...
