Now that you mention it, Hidaka-sensei does seem to always make it a point of mentioning when tests are going on, even when nothing happens involving them. Maybe it's to let people know how time is passing?
"Fervently" surprised us, too, because we didn't remember Rihito saying anything that might translate to that. But we tend to forget details a lot, so we went back to check and there still wasn't anything! Except maybe when he says "geki rabu," which doesn't quite translate to as fine a word as "fervent." Of course, if it wasn't fitting, the translator wouldn't have thought of it, but as translators ourselves, we're like, "You couldn't have come up with something a little closer to what he really said?" Occupational hazard, I guess.
I have a lot to say about the last chapter of Hitsuji 5, but I think I'll put that in an entry on our journal. It also may take some time for me to remember what I wanted to say.
We don't really have anything else specific to say, but it was a really great volume overall. Suwa is so cute♥
We don't usually have too many problems with cliff-hangers, but 7 Hate was one where we were definitely glad to have volume eight on hand (there are certain advantages to having to write summaries, much as we hate doing it). Of all the places to decide to delay the series, my goodness. We need more people to buy it so they can all send CMX letters saying, "We want 8 noooooow!" (Only not that whiny, because then it will probably annoy the CMX people and make them want to delay it further out of spite, which would be very sad, because the CMX people are generally very very nice.)
Kurara-chan's editor. We checked the bonus page she drew in volume 4, and Hidaka-sensei's notes did mention that she was drawing manga for Hana to Yume. That's all we know for sure, but Skip Beat! does have a very strong Hidaka-sensei vibe running through it, so we can't help but wonder if one of her assistants is its author. Unfortunately, they didn't have it at the Kinokuniya that also had volume 3 of "with!!", and we're trying to be better about splurging, so we're going to wait until some other manga we want comes out before we try again to get it. And that means we've only seen the anime, so we have no solid evidence whatsoever.
Your talking about fashion just reminds us how little we pay attention to that stuff. (We were looking for Mom and Sarah in Jo-Ann's yesterday, and we were trying to remember what color Sarah was wearing so we could spot them more easily, and I was like, "I don't know, red?" and when we finally found them, she was in light blue.)
We noticed a lot of similarities with VB Rose, too, actually. Not in the exact events, but in the order of developments.
Saki is such a great villain! Which means we love to hate him. Man, the ending of 7 Hate is so scary.

You're probably thinking of the right spot (p24 in the English volume, when he recalls her first saying his name at age 2-"I love her fervently!") It wouldn't entirely surprise me if that translator chose a word he liked rather than one that was strictly true to the original. His translations seem slightly looser. But he tends to use interesting words... and the dialogue itself is fun... so... I... I kinda like the translations, even if maybe they're not exactly correct. I'm sorry!! *turns away in shame* (now I'm curious though, what would you have translated "geki love" to?)

Yeah... I was kinda wondering what would be a good way to contact CMX and beg for 8 Hate. If I do, I would definitely try not to be whiny! More like, overflowing with love and thankfulness and praise for CMX's greatness in bringing the series to us in the first place, and by the way I'd really really really love it if I could read the next volume soon♥ :D I don't know if it would work anyway, though, unless we got a WHOOOOLE lot of people writing in to tell them how much they love the series. And I don't even know if that many people who read the series exist. I keep seeing all this hype for Name of the Flower and other new series of theirs (they seem to be getting better about sending review copies to various manga-bloggers), and that's great too, but I'm like "What about "I Hate You♥"? That one deserves hype and publicity and love too!!" But I guess it's hard because it's already halfway into the series (wow!!). But that just means there's more to read at once for those who do start reading late!
...anyway. Oh, Kurara-chan. Wow, Nakamura Yoshiki-sensei?? That would be crazy! But... she's been writing manga since 1993. So hmmm. Hidaka-sensei could've been her assistant though, maybe! Hmmm. I forgot about Kurara's drawing in volume 4. Who could she remind me offfffff?? I don't know. One of these days I'll figure it out! (or not!)
Haha. I do notice fashion a lot, in manga and in real life (though I have my fair share of complete obliviousness to obvious details, too). And it seems like Hidaka-sensei keeps working it into her series... ever since she mentioned going to school for fashion design it started to make sense. There's the whole VBR shop, and half the cast of I Hate You♥ are hair stylists, and now Eiko (and also Asako's interest in fashion), and then Ri has a clothing boutique or something too, doesn't he? It's funny seeing evidence of the mangaka's other interests in their manga.
Arg, Saki!!! I don't know if I could say I love to hate him at this point. I'm still too fearful for everyone's safety to be able to indulge in enjoying my hatred. Eeeeek!! It is such a scary ending. It's going to be a long six months...
Oh, and because I was just reading it earlier-I came across the mention of Hidaka-sensei in Fruits Basket 3. Yay!! But then there was something about some "Sachiko-chan" with a note about her being the protagonist of SekaIchi. And I was confused. And I wondered if you were able to explain, or if it would remain one of the great mysteries of the universe.

But if you're not true to the original, you can lose some of the nuance and change the characters' personalities! I think we would have translated it to "I love her fiercely!" Or tried to come up with something to reflect the slang better. Like I said before, "fervently" just sounds too upstanding.
Your idea for a letter sounds like exactly the kind of thing that would motivate us at least. And if we're any reflection of the general public (which we tend to not be), then most people like to do things for people who like them and show it. But it's also true that it might take a looooot a lot a lot of letters like that to do the trick. I do wonder why I Hate You♥ seems to be so invisible to the world.
Yeah, we figured it might be a long shot, but we are determined to find out whether or not there is some connection between Yoshiki Nakamura and Banri Hidaka. There's another assistant, Sugino-san, who does a bonus page in 8 Hate, and Hidaka-sensei's comments talk about how she had so much more experience and so she (Hidaka-sensei) would always go to her for advice, like, "How do you think I should do this?" or "Is this good?" etc. So maybe it's more likely to be her... Either way, when we looked Nakamura-sensei up on Wikipedia she was from a prefecture that's not Aichi, which is not promising, but she could be close to Aichi. This is what we get for being so terrible at geography.
Right, Sachiko. We actually did not remember that at all. The note can be attributed to one thing: ignorance. And lack of proper research. We did enough research to know that she was a protagonist of Hidaka-sensei's, but she's not in Sekaichi, she's in Owaranai Koi no Tame ni.

And yeah, you're right that staying true to the original is the best all around. If only you guys could translate all the manga I read! I understand your point about a word like "fervently" being more formal(?) or literary a term than "fiercely" or the like. Still... that wording left a really strong impression on me of Ri's love for his little sister (possibly a stronger impression than "fiercely" because it's a more unusual word? (but then, maybe it's adding on meanings that the original didn't have...)), so I didn't think it was a terrible choice.
There is a Sugino Takumi who has written for HanaYume, but as far as I can tell she only has one book out (there's a picture of it here) so I don't know if it's the same one, or if she would use the same name in that context. It looks like she does occasional one-shots for Silky magazine these days. But her blog has a link to Higuchi-sensei's!
I need to write a letter! Whether it does any good or not. I feel like I can do it now, after writing this whole entry full of stuff, and with the two new books fresh in my mind. Do it, Lys!! And... I don't know why it's so invisible to the world. But the few people I know who have read it and liked it (including myself) all seem to be completely hooked. Why doesn't everyone recognize Hidaka Banri's genius??

To his credit, the "geki-rabu" thing was probably meant to have impact for being out of character, so using any unusual word probably works. I guess. (<--Always jealous.)
Hmm, Sugino-sensei's style... looks like it could match... or not... The bonus page is all kind of SD and doesn't really give us anything to go off of.
Yay! Write a letter! Go for it! Fight!! It's true--everyone we know of who's read it likes it a lot a lot a lot, so why does I Hate You♥ keep falling under the radar!? Why!!??
