garden mysteries the finale?

You guuuuuys I'm so glad I can access livejournal again to tell you all about what's going on in my back yard these days!!!

Okay, I think I know (for real now!) what's going on with the squashes in the garden. I mentioned to my grandma that I'd found what looked like a zucchini growing on what I thought would be butternut squash plants, and so I assumed it was an unripe butternut. But she told me that those have hard shells right from the get-go, so it had to be a zucchini. But how, if I'd never had a zucchini big enough to leave ripe seeds when it was composted?

Well. I developed a new theory, involving cross-breeding squashes, and today I remembered to look it up to find out if it was possible. Apparently, it's very possible-butternut squashes, pumpkins, zucchini, all that stuff can cross-pollinate (cucumber's too distant though, I read). So the seeds that came up probably were from a butternut squash, but it'd been pollinated with zucchini pollen, and apparently zucchini's got the stronger traits because that's what's growing. Only, my zucchini are missing half their seeds and have a bulbous bottom because they've got butternut squash blood flowing through their veins (not... quite, lys). But... maybe a couple of the plants will have fruit that more resembles butternut? I hope so. Science is so interesting. Genetics~

In other outside-news, yesterday it rained from like 10:30 am AAAAAAAAAAAALL day until evening or so. And then it stormed all night too. So we got tons of rain. And today, new kinds of mushrooms had popped up!! They're super cute and I took a bunch of pictures.

Finally, in nerdy manga news, Sakamoto Miku (Stolen Hearts, Nadeshiko Club) is starting a new series in Betsuhana, set in the Taisho era!! (~1912-1926) Yesssssssssssss!!! My favourite era of Japan(ese fashion) :D (well, their modern fashion is pretty fantastic too. my favourite era of traditional Japanese fashion? ...only it's not quite that either, because it's a mix of traditional Japanese and the incoming western fashions, and that's exactly what I looooove about it!) (by the way, this is another manga set during that period, and yes, it is part of my most recent CDJapan order (I was also able to place preorders for Tenshi 1/2 Houteishiki (NEW HIDAKA MANGA EEEEEE♥) and Koi dano Ai dano 3♥) (also, yes, I am hoping that by the time my order ships sometime late August the exchange rate will be a little less completely-awful. hooooope...)).
