Ace Attorney 1-4 Replay

Stupid work making me about a day or two behind on all of this fun.

This is the 2.12 time I've played this case. I say the .12 because I played up to the first trial a previous time and then I got stuck and I was too stubborn to use the FAQ. I was happy that I was able to get through most of this case without an faq and with few penalties. I noticed quite a few funny things this playgthrough, so let's hope I can remember all of them.

Of course, I remember the opening shocking me. Edgeworth had just become pretty endearing to me at this point and to see him trying to kill someone, allegedly, well it couldn't be.

Lotta: I remember finding her annoying the first playthrough, but she's kind of grown on me now. I think it had to do with her wanting money for the film you wasted. I like her character design. I think it shows off her kind of funky personality well. I also thought it was funny that she defended Southerners. She wanted to make sure that Phoenix and everyone knew that not all Southerners were like her. I think that is a fresh approach to an otherwise stereotyped character. I didn't notice any of that the first time playing.

Yanni: I found him annoying back then and I find him annoying now. At least when he's still in his crazy old man phase. I believe I was surprised to discover he was this mysterious Yanni Yogi. I felt sorry for him once he was on the stand again and talking like his normal self.

Larry: It was a pleasant surprise to run into him again. His reaction to Missle was really funny, but I didn't waste time with that on this playthrough. I had forgotten about his outburst in court too, so that was a pleasant surprise as well. I thought I had really lost and did something wrong, so I'm glad I didn't hit the off button. His imperfect testimony was fun to poke holes in.

Polly: I really can't believe they let you cross examine the parrot, but it was really funny.

Manfred: I hate him so much on the first playthrough because he wouldn't let me do anything. All those scary objections kept flying my way. His line about the granddaughter and the ATM pin are hilarious. I love it when you finally start putting the pressure on him at the end and he starts holding his "war" wound.

Judge: This is actually the first case where I noticed the Judge getting wide eyed flustered with people. I hadn't noticed it the previous cases for some reason, but I guess he does get flustered by von Karma alot in this one.

Gumshoe: I really liked Gumshoe in this case. He helped you out, in his own way, even though he knew he shouldn't. He was on your side for once because his beloved Edgeworth was in peril. I loved that he offered to take everyone out for a celebration dinner. I can't imagine where they would have gone.

Edgeworth: He's such a socially awkward person in this case and I think it shows more here because you actually get to talk to him for more than one scene outside of court. I loved when he took Maya's advice seriously and said "Whoooop!" I also noticed that he said "y'all" when he talks to Lotta outside of court. It still pissed me off when he objected to his own innocence.

Maya: The first time I played I felt really bad for her that she couldn't channel her sister because I too needed her to tell me what was going on. On this playthrough, I still felt bad, but I didn't care about needing the information. I kind of felt they were using Mia as a crutch when they should have been building on their own skills. I was sad to see her go at the end because I like Maya.

I thought the ending credits were interesting. I wasn't sure who the point of view character for those conversations was supposed to be. At first I thought it was Phoenix, then Maya, and then I don't know who because they all talked about Phoenix in the third person.

Is it just me, or does the end photo make Edgeworth look pregnant?

I wasn't much of a pairing person the first time around, but I can see potential for Edgeworth/Maya in this. Of course, he never addresses her by name in this case, but I did see some stuff in here that could lead to some romantic (or dating) potential.

A line I noticed for the first time that had me thinking of all kinds of von Karma ships (mostly crack) was this, "It's been a while since I've had a defense attorney last this long." He says in in reference to the trial and to Phoenix, but I think it would be more hilarious if he said this in the heat of the moment. Because von Karma totally loves to bang random defense attorneys (I'm looking at you Greg and Mia).

Overall, I thought this was a solid case and it is my favorite from the first game.
