resolute

Egads, January is already a third over. It's high time to talk about resolutions.

I've been dreading a bit reviewing my 2007 resolutions, because I didn't do that well. Here's what I resolved last year:

1. Get an agent before the end of the year. - Okay, I knew this was an ambitious goal, but I did imagine it was entirely realistic to expect that I'd be at least in the process of querying agents before the end of the year. Well, not so much. Editing -- rewriting, I should really call it rewriting -- took a lot longer than I was expecting.

2. Read at least as many books in 2007 as in 2006. - I read 21 books in 2006. In 2007, I read 15 (and didn't finish one of those). Oops. To be fair, in 2006, I read 6 of those books in the month of December, when I didn't do any writing. I didn't have the luxury of taking December off this year, so I didn't get to build up my count at the end again. This means that my overall reading rate during the year was approximately the same, rather than a big step backwards.

3. Exercise more. - Yay, one succesful resolution! I started running in January and kept it up fairly regularly until October. I also made a point of taking walks, and using the exercise bike after we bought it in August. I'd say I exercised 2 or 3 times during more weeks than not, and that's pretty good.

Now, moving on to 2008. Last year's resolutions were a decent set, so I'm basically just going to repeat them:

1. Get an agent. For real this year. Next month I'll be ready to start querying agents with The Overworld. It won't be the most perfect manuscript it can be by then, but I can continue editing during the query process until I produce a version that an agent accepts, since I'll be contacting potential agents on a gradual and individual basis. There are a lot of steps and subgoals for this "get an agent" resolution that I'll be blabbing on about later.

2. Read books more regularly, ideally every day. I can accept that I'm a slow reader and will not get through books at the rate of some people, but it's lame how much time I let pass between books, and how I haven't made reading a part of my regular routine. Tsk tsk, writer -- get better about reading.

3. Keep exercising and eating well. I'm off to a great start this year: I've started running again and have done some form of exercise nearly every day. I'm going to continue aiming for daily exercise, and I'll be quite happy if I actually work out 5 times a week. As for eating, in general I'm pretty good, but I do consume far too many sweets and need to remember not to give in to every sugary temptation.

So that's the plan. Hoping for 3 out of 3 this year!
