Do the Faculty Dance
So, finished new faculty orientation. Still can't get an ID card or get my official email running, but such is the nature of bureaucracy. I get the vague idea that someone in HR has a massive pile of Personnel Action Forms (the lifeblood of hiring, apparently), and have hoarded them, sitting on them like Gollum, and baring their teeth when people suggest they do something with them. I may be wrong.
Did the social thing--met a few pretty cool fellow new faculty types. Though they did roll the carpet up for the new-faculty-meet-and-greet at 8, and so there wasn't quite as much meet and greeting as there might have been.
I have 12 folks in my Early American classes--it takes 10 to make a course. So I need to keep at least ten of 'em til the 10th or 12th day of the semester, or somesuch.
So, I may have to ameliorate my usual 'scare the slackers' beginning course spiel. And, possibly, cut my paper requirements for that course slightly.
