Last week, I was walking to campus, and parked in front of our house, I noticed an older car, full of stuff.
I imagined it was going to be someone's move-in car, unemptied as of yet, or maybe some boyfriend or girlfriend making an exodus to new digs. Or possibly one of those 'I live in my car' travelers, who put all their worldly goods in til it crams their back windows.
And then I noticed the roaches.
The car was full with garbage. And not like old lamps and other move-in detritus. Things like nasty old paper plates and tin cans and the like. The garbage filled everything but the driver's seat, and was towards doing that: it looked like the floorboards and the seat were both fairly piled.
You can smell it through the rolled-up windows as it simmers in the East Texas soup-heat.
So I thought--maybe I'm looking at the aftermath of some kind of spurned-girlfriend / angry roommate revenge. Boy, that person's gonna be pissed!
But then, later, the car was gone. Someone had gotten in it and driven it off.
Later, it was parked further down the street. I've seen it several days now, with what's apparently the same nasty garbage inside.
I've got some theories on why someone might want to drive around with a car full of garbage, but most of them have to do with CRAZY. I'm tempted to sit someday and try to catch a glimpse of the GarbageCar owner--but I'm a little afraid that either my conjectures will be more fun than reality, or that . . . they wouldn't be.
