Synopsis:Yoshiki is trying to finish a song....but the only way to do so, is by keeping up with a promise he made for his dead best friend.

Yoshiki sighed deeply, tapping his pencil on the shiny black piano. The song was nearly done…but something was missing. It’s been a year and six months, since he stopped playing, out of grief of his old friend and band mate’s death. hide’s death was sudden and unexpected. It was something he felt will never pass him….but then the urge to finish his Violet U.K album over took him. Now all he had to do was finish this last song.

Everything he did for this song was lovely…the vocals, the piano, the drums…everything…but something was missing. It’s not the singer. Daughter has a lovely voice after all…. So what the hell was it?

As if on cue, the renewed workaholic’s phone began to ring loudly. “What?” he asked, not caring how rude it was, to answer the phone in such a manner.

“Yoshiki-kun?” Pata asked. “What’s up?”

“Nothing just working on this song.” The musician sighed in annoyance.

“That same one?” the guitarist asked, tilting his head.

“….I can’t figure out what’s missing…I’ve thought of everything-“

“What about guitars?” The younger man suggested.

“….Guitars?”

“You still have that one hi-chan gave you right?”

Yoshiki blinked a few times, at the mention of their deceased friend’s name. He sighed, then looked at the dusty, yellow with red heart decorated Fernandez. “Yeah, I do.”

“Have you been practicing like you promised him?” Pata asked, tilting his head.

“….Well….I uh….um…” he mumbled, staring at the floor.

“hide was the only one, who had faith in you in that department. Have you forgotten?” The fellow guitarist lectured. Yoshiki pouted, as the memory came to him….feeling guilty and even more depressed.

“What’s on your mind, Yoshiki?” Toshio asked, sitting on an amp. The young drummer/pianist stood up from his seat at the piano, and walked in front of his band mates, gaining their undivided attention.

“I’ve decided, since I’m the leader and writer of most of these songs, I should learn to play the guitar.” He announced. All eyes remained on him for a long time, in an uncomfortable silence, before laughter took over. “What?!”

“Yoshiki, you should stay at the piano,” Taiji giggled unmercifully.

“I agree, you work your ass off on everything else…what makes you think you have time for this?” Pata asked, before playing a very complicated and awesome guitar solo. hide said nothing, he just sat there and listened to everyone’s cruel teasing.

“I mean it! I want to play! I know some of the bass, so I think the guitar won’t be as hard.” The band leader whined. At those words, hide stood up and walked towards him.

“Have fun.” He said with a smile, before walking out. Yoshiki pouted even more, watching the red head leave the stage, quietly.

Of course everyone thought he was saying this to be mean, until the oldest member came back, holding his yellow and red guitar. “Yoshiki!” he shouted. The depressed musician turned his head.

“Hm?” he asked, pouting. hide sat next to him in a chair.

“Do you promise to practice this everyday?” he asked quietly, patience painting his face.

“Yeah.” Yoshiki replied, tilting his head, wondering what he was getting at.

“Good, we can start now.” hide giggled, handing him the instrument.

“Really?”

“Yes, let’s start with the simple scales.” The older man suggested, giving him a kind smile. Yoshiki took the guitar in his hands, while hide picked up another, doing the same. “Are you ready?”

“I think,” the younger man mumbled, feeling kind of nervous.

“You’ll get it in no time.” hide said gently, giving him a reassuring smile.

Six years had passed, and X Japan had just finished performing their last live. Everyone was saying their goodbyes, returning each other’s instruments, clothes and what not…and Yoshiki was no different.

“Thanks for the lessons, here you go.” Yoshiki said, handing hide his guitar.

“It’s yours Yoshi-chan.” hide laughed, giving it back. “You promised to practice everyday, so it’s yours.”

“But-“

“It’s alright, I have so many already…what’s missing one going to do?” the now thirty-three year old asked, giving him a hug. “I always had faith in you…keep it up okay?” Yoshiki watched, as the older man got into his car, heading home.

“I promise that I will.”

“Yeah, I did promise him…I did it again, right before we all went our separate ways.” Yoshiki sighed, staring into space. “hide even told me that he was happy that I kept practicing. I wonder if he’s angry with me…”

“Knowing him, he’s probably tapping his foot somewhere, wondering what made you this way.” Pata giggled. “Either that, or he’s contemplating a good prank.”

Yoshiki laughed, as he stood up and walked towards the guitar. “You’re probably right.”

“Yoshiki, I know out of all of us, hide’s watching over you the most.” The younger man said in all seriousness. “He cared about you the most….and he worried about you too.”

“Everyone worries about me.” Yoshiki giggled.

“I know, but hide was the person who always managed to talk you into resting.” Pata reminded him.

“He tried the hardest.” The pianist/drummer agreed, running his fingers across the guitar strings.

“Are you going to practice now?” Pata prodded.

“Yeah, now will you leave me alone?” Yoshiki asked, in annoyance.

“Bye Yoshiki.” Pata giggled childishly.

“Mmhm…bye.” The older man growled, slamming his phone on the hook. He sighed deeply, taking the guitar in his hands, sitting back in his piano seat. He slowly tuned the neglected instrument, before playing a soft tune. “Heh, it’s perfect…thanks Pata.” Yoshiki laughed, blushing slightly. “I’m sorry I took so long hide…I hope you’re not mad.”

Daughter rushed into the studio, trying to find the musician…only to stop at the sound of a lovely sound of a guitar playing.

“Who’s playing like that?” she asked herself quietly, walking towards the recording booth. Her eyes went wide, at the sight of Yoshiki, playing the guitar, lost in his own little world. Caught in awe, Daughter leaned against the doorway, watching this. She remembered him telling her once, that the guitar belonged to a friend he lost some time ago…and she thought he would never pick it up and put some use to it.

“Daughter, you’re late.” The man called, as he stopped playing.

“Um…I’m sorry about that.” She mumbled, getting scared.

“It’s alright, I was thinking…of how to finish this song.” Yoshiki explained, looking at her.

“You did?” Daughter asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Mmhm.” He said, patting a chair nearby. She sat next to him, ready for anything. “What do you think of this?” As he began to play the beautiful tune she heard only part of, relief and joy came to the frustrated musician….he finally found a way to finish it.

I wrote this a little bit after I realized there was no way I was going to school for another few days. *Sigh* I hate when things come up...but I shouldn't feel too bad. It's a few days that I get to spend acting the fool. XD
