the end of my first week in washington. pretty weird. it's too soon to say what i think of the whole situation. i must say that the whole set up is pretty ideal. three months after finishing my magazine journalism degree, i landed a paid, full-time internship with a 1,000,000-circulation magazine in a major city. i'm living temporarily with a guy i already know for pretty cheap. there's a subway station a few blocks away and a 20-minute commute into the office. the subway isn't as cheap as some cities', but it doesn't matter because work gives me a $115 a month in subway credit. there's a bike path a half mile away that leads into downtown d.c. (14-mile ride), and since i finally got my bike in working order today, i'll probably ride tomorrow and do some tourist-y stuff, and i might look into commuting to work via bike. the people at work are really nice, and i'm doing research work to ease myself in and will get some writing opportunities before the internship ends. my boss has even already mentioned job opportunities to me.
that said, it's hard to say if d.c.'s the place for me. it's a place that seems to take itself pretty seriously. and i'm not sure that the people who work in the kinds of jobs that are here are easy for me to relate to. and the magazine, kiplinger's, is a finance publication--not my expertise by any stretch of the imagination. i already miss so many people. not to say people here aren't as good. you'll always miss people after a move.
my plan is to get involved with as many things as possible while i'm here. attend rides scheduled by the area cyclist association. do freelance writing (I've been talking to the music editor for NUVO magazine and am looking into other possibilities. get a part-time job at a restaurant somewhere, preferably bike delivery. go to shows? look for full-time journalism work to start in with after the internship ends.
i'm a little afraid that i'll get offered a job here but won't want to stay. the cost of living out here is pretty nuts. but a job at kiplinger's would be a great starting spot and hard to turn down.
all in all, i'm doing well. i wanted to come here, and i needed to get out of muncie. this is a great opportunity for me, and if i decide i don't like d.c., i can leave before christmas. if someone told me a year ago i'd get this internship, i'd have been ecstatic.
tomorrow, install router for my own computer and finally get my temporary room (a 9*10 den which is actually a lot nicer than it sounds) set up. bike ride all day and maybe stop in at a few potbelly restaurants to ask if they're hiring. then party at a girl from work's. washington d.c.
