My parents' visit to Smithers

May 13, 2007 20:57

After my parents had moved to their new house and after my mother's last exam was completed, my parents decided to drive up to Smithers! We had a few days together up here, I could finally show them the places that I was so impressed with before. They stayed at the Smithers guesthouse, as Daniel was in town for a forestry course. We cooked, we sipped wine and ate DQ for dessert. The indulgences you give yourself while on vacation...

We spent a day around Smithers, and the next day I took my parents up to the bed and breakfast that my crew had such a good time at before (see this entry for all the fireworks, goofing around, archery, and wineshine). I felt like quite the tour guide on the way up, making little comments about what we were passing. Our first stop was Moricetown Canyon, a place famous both within BC and Canada for its falls and its history. The steep canyon walls channel the Bulkley River to a little more than 10 or 15 ft., and as it boils through the canyon the fish travelling in it are forced into the narrow area. The local people (the Gitxsan) have fished here for thousands of years.

My mum enjoyed the view! She seemed surprise to still see banks of snow in May...

My dad thought the canyon walls were pretty cool, he insisted on going out to see the fishing platforms.

We stopped at the 'Ksan Village, which is a historical reconstruction of a village of the Gitxsan people (I love the names of the old villages around here, they all begin with "Kit" or "Git" which means "place of". So in the area, there's the place of the rabbit "Kitwanga" and the place of the quiet people "Gitseguecla"... I've wanted to go there since last May but never seemed to have the time! Although I checked to see that it was open, only the museum and ground were open- all of the great tour houses for which the facility is known for were closed. But we still had a good time, checking out the museum and the grounds.

After that we hit Poplar Park, and it was good to be back! I chatted up Kathy and David, and gave my parents the tour. They really liked the sheep.

And the sheep didn't mind being fed, either.

The view of the house from the field, we walked along the edge by the river's edge and listened to the grouse drumming in the woods.

David was kind enough to let us tag around after him doing some chores, I think my mum's favourite part was putting the sheep to bed.

And I guess a repayment of the favour was my dad teaching David how to prune his fruit trees!!!

I thought somehow that we would run out of things to do, but I found myself having to tell myself to come back to things later... Sad but true! All in all it was a great trip, even if it was just for one night! After the trip, there was one more night in town before the Bullards packed up and drove back to Victoria, and Daniel went back to Terrace.
