lordsluk: i think so, but there are 7 variations called modes as well, it started in greece thats all i know

lordsluk: the names of the scales corrospond to the areas surrounding ancient greece, Ionian ~ major scale (italia), Aeolian~ minor scale, Phrygian, Lydian, Dorian, locrian etc
