Yesterday I subbed at Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie. It was a pretty good experience. I was actually subbing at my certification level (all of my subbing to this point has been at the elementary level), and I was actually in a language arts classroom again. It was amazing.
My favorite part, though, was when I was handing out their MLA handout. I explained that I had taught writing at OSU for two years, and as part of that I had taught MLA citation and formatting, so I practically have MLA style memorized, so they should ask me questions if they had any.
Then, after I explained everything and what they should be doing, I asked if anyone had questions. One boy raised his hand, and I called on him.
"So, you worked at OSU?" I nodded, believing he was going to either ask about OSU football or make a crack about OSU and University of Oregon. "So, I was wondering, what was it like teaching there? Is it different from teaching in a high school?"
I smiled wryly at him. He was slick! "You're very clever," I responded, "but I think we'd better stay on topic."
The class all laughed at him and then got to work. I miss teaching!
