Tikal was one of the most important and powerful Mayan cities. It is located in what is now northern Guatemala. It's history goes back as far as the 4th century BC, but Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, ca. 200 to 900 AD. At that time it's population was about 90,000 people. Then people left the city, and jungles took over it.
