My Saturday

The rain stopped at around lunchtime and I went out in the garden to work on some of the pots: I lifted the dahlias and chocolate cosmos, and planted the bulbs.

Even with the rain and winter approaching, you can still find some colour and beauty.

But it's all rather melancholic.
I don't think I'm quite ready for winter - in this old house, with its single-glazed windows and lack of central heating in the back and upstairs winter feels rather long.

And then of course, there are the short days and grey skies. In order to have something to look forward to - with a bit of luck, dare I say it, blue skies and sun - I booked a flight to Naples for late January.
(I received a £200 cheque today from British Airways to compensate for the cancellation of my flight back from Turin a few weeks ago! Quite unexpectedly as I thought that they were going to blame the weather).

A natura morta in the gazebo:

In the last few years, autumn (and November in particular) hasn't quite agreed with me.
First it was the accident getting on the train with left me with a big scar, then it was the sudden vertigo attacks and vomiting, and the crippling back pain... this year has been toothache and abscess.
On Friday morning when I was at the office I had another small attack of vertigo: it started with my right ear feeling blocked and then a ringing noise and headache. Luckily I did manage to work through it, although all I really wanted was to go and lie down somewhere.

I've started re-reading Miss Marple Omnibus - one of my favourite treats. It's the equivalent of comfort food.

Trapped in the mirror:

And now it's time for bed. Adrian's 'up north' so I'll just have to make do with Miss Marple...
