DOCTOR, DOCTORRRR

Who: Hak Soo and Chai~*+~*+
When: Thursday June 23rd, dawn.
Where: Chai's lab and Hak Soo's practice
What: An accident in which Chai temporarily remembers the risks of being an alchemist so he pops by to visit a "friend" (strictly one-sided and used loosely).

Chai didn't even notice the sun rise over the horizon but he keenly felt the fatigue on his body. The thought of sleep had been expelled from his mind but his body remembered. It wasn't until each of the dim candles that lit the lab flickered and died, only to be replaced by the sun's rays stretching in from the horizon did Chai realize it was dawn. However he couldn't stop, not yet.

He had been slaving in the lab over an experiment which was nearly complete. Very soon, if all went well, he would hopefully have the breakthrough he had been longing for ever since his disaster with the cockerel, bad wine, twenty-four beeswax candles, copper wire and gunpowder. This breakthrough would secure his finances for next month, put dinner on the table and ensure his lab supplies could be paid for. It also meant he'd finally have enough money to get a hair cut! It made this experiment was a matter of utmost importance.

Now all he had to do was make sure that the oxygen in the tube was expelled before opening the funnel to allow the hydrogen in. Usually one minute would be sufficient. He reached for a timer in his desk drawer but it was missing. However time was of the essence so Chai started counting himself... one... two... three...

Thirteen... Chai's mind began to waver at the thought of finally being able to rest after it was complete. Seventeen... Fourteen... Thirty-two... Twenty-nine... Fifty-six...  It took less than fifteen seconds for his upright posture to slackened. His eyes drifted shut and his head lolled over to the right. Fifty-seven... A distant horn sounded, startling Chai out of his lull. Fifty-eight... fifty-nine... sixty! It was time to release the hydrogen into the tube.

Unbeknownst to Chai, all the events had occurred in thirty seconds, time distorted by his fatigued mind.

The valve was opened. The hydrogen came in contact with the trace oxygen remaining in the tube. The glass tube shattered without warning, the fragments giving Chai scores of small nicks and cuts. It was a small explosion, nothing grand like ones Chai had made before. Except the element of surprise made him unprepared.

Examining himself, it seemed he had come out rather unscathed. Until he saw that part of the old metallic holder that had been supporting the tube had somehow managed to embed part of itself in his arm. Chai couldn't remember if he screamed or not. But the next thing he knew, with the efforts of his compass and panic combined, he was banging on the door of a "doctor friend" he knew who could fix him up.

Key word being: could.
