WHO: Ludwig and Feliciano WHEN: 15th of November, 6pm WHERE: their mansion, dining room WHAT: Suspicions of infidelity come into the open, polygamy hinting sends someone into “Gimme my space” mode.
The smell of food hit him as soon as he walked in the door, and despite the unpleasant twisting in his stomach, he was hungry and it smelled delicious. He tried not to think about how long it had been since he had eaten with Feliciano. Too long.
He hadn't actually accomplished anything at work today, either. He'd spent most of it staring blankly at the papers in front of him, trying to figure out what he was going to say to Feliciano. And still, he'd come home without a plan. He didn't know what to do.
But he sat down and waited patiently until his fiance was sitting across from him. Thanking him quietly, Ludwig picked up his fork a took a bite. It was good. He said so. After taking swallowing a few more mouthfuls, Ludwig set his fork down awkwardly and fixed his eyes on a point over Feliciano's left shoulder.
Feliciano picked at his food, nibbling a few pieces of the pasta. The rest of it was awkwardly pushed around the plate and built into a tower. After demolishing it he tensed as he finally noticed the heavy stare directed over his shoulder.
"So ummm." He licked his lips then took a slow sip at his wine, trying to get ride of the dry feeling in his throat. "You said you wanted to talk...?"
Ludwig picked at the edge of the table. He glanced at Feliciano, then away again.
"I-I..." Clearing his throat, he tried again. "You... you've been missing a lot of work, lately." That wasn't a very good way to describe everything that had been happening in the last few weeks. But it was a start. Maybe.
"Have I?" Feliciano tried to brush it off, stomach knotting. He knew he shouldn't have made all those lunch dates with Otto, but, they just had so much to catch on. So many years lost from lies spawned by grandfather's, by war and so many more things.
"I've been meeting friends and stuff. I won't miss anymore," he promised quietly.
Ludwig was half-way through a sigh before he realized what he was doing and tried to suppress it. Shaking his head slowly, Ludwig returned his gaze to the edge of the table his fingernail was embedded in. Focusing on the grain of the wood, Ludwig tried again.
"There's more than that..." He glanced up at Feliciano, finally fixing his eyes on his fiance's face. "My cousin Otto came here, looking for you. After you disappeared." He didn't say that Otto had been much more worried than was expected of a 'friend'. Especially a friend who had only just arrived in town after years without contact.
"O-otto?" Feliciano swallowed and pushed his plate away, twisting the napkin in his lap nervously. He didn't want to lie to Ludwig, but he knew the man wouldn't like the truth - I kissed your cousin because I used to love him a lot and I still do.
"We ah, we used to be really good friends when we were littler," he started quietly, chancing a look up. "I'd just found out he wasn't-" dead. He almost choked on the word and forced a smile. "Found out he'd moved back. Then I kinda wanted some alone time but I forgot to tell him I was painting... I'm sorry."
It wasn't exactly an apology that Ludwig was looking for. He wanted the truth, first. But he could tell from the look on Feliciano's face the he wasn't going to like it. Either way, he had to know.
Hoping he wasn't wrong and praying that he wasn't right, Ludwig said, "You've been acting oddly since he came back..." Stomach clenching, he asked, "What's going on?"
Feliciano winced, mouth opening and shutting a few times in an attempt to speak. With Ludwig, that was basically a direct question that demanded the truth: Have you been seeing my cousin behind my back?
He licked his lips and smoothed the napkin out on his lap, swallowing around the feeling to puke. The taste of bile stung his throat and he hung his head in shame.
"H-he was my first love. He... I..." He bit his lip and took a deep breath to continue, the words tripping on his tongue and coming out in a rushed mess. "Wekissedafewtimes..."
There it was. His suspicions confirmed. And he wasn't sure if he was glad that he finally knew the truth or hated the fact. But he did know that his mouth was dry and filled with a bitter coppery taste. He felt betrayed. "...I see."
It made sense though, he thought. It was so ironic. Ludwig was perfectly aware of how much he looked like his cousin. Was that why Feliciano had fallen in love with him? Was he just a replacement for Otto? And now that his cousin was back, was Feliciano planning to leave him for his cousin?
Trying hard to push away the doubts that were swooping down on him, Ludwig glanced down at his plate. The mere sight of food made him feel sick to his stomach. Pushing the plate away, Ludwig fixed his eyes on Feliciano despite the lurch he felt when he did.
Struggling to put the words together, he finally managed to ask, "And you... still love him?"
He was tense, barely breathing, still as one of the garden statues. '...I see.' That was all. No rage, yet, but the deep betrayal made the air thick and hard to breath around. Feliciano fidgeted under the hard gaze, thumb nervously rubbing over the ring as his stomach knotted with guilt. He'd kissed Otto while wearing this ring. He was horrible.
"I... Nonno told- He told me that Otto hated me and would never come back. But I still loved him." He bit down hard of his lip, shoulders hunched. There was no way he could look up, no way.
"But it was a lie, and he came back. He came back for me Ludwig. I love you both the same, so much it feels like my heart will burst." So much so that he felt his heart would tear apart if either of them left him. Which was what he was so scared of now
( ... )
He came back for me... But did he really? Ludwig couldn't help but wonder if Otto really had come back for Feliciano, or if their meeting was just a coincidence. It would have to be some coincidence... though Liberty wasn't really that big. But Ludwig didn't really want to consider the possibility that it was true.
He didn't know what to say. There was nothing he could say. His silence spoke for him. He didn't want to look at Feliciano, but he couldn't take his eyes off him, either.
It could work... What could work? The... three of them? ...Like that? The idea was a little much to handle, particularly since they were talking about his cousin. Ludwig didn't know if the fact that Feliciano wasn't looking at him made him feel better or worse, but he felt the shock show itself on his face. Slumping backwards into his chair, he felt empty.
There was no anger or despair, just desolation. I love you both the same... It didn't feel like it. Did Feliciano really love him anymore? Or had he only really loved Otto all this time
( ... )
Cheating on me? Feliciano winced and shrunk further into himself, tenser than he'd been in years. This was one of the most nerve wracking, horrible things he'd ever had to do, trembling with his fingernails now biting into the flesh of his palm. Given the choice he'd much prefer to keep the nightmares about the night he killed the man who nearly shot both him and Nonno. He was forced to grab the linen napkin and blot the blood away, keeping it hidden. It would have to be thrown away.
"I-I didn't think it would even happen." His voice cracked harshly and the room was silent for a moment. Everything had been so weird, so rushed. All the love he'd felt for Otto had just... rushed back.
"I-It hasn't been long," he promised. Theirs voice's, low, were loud in the huge dining hall, devoid of the usual bustle of the few people Roma still paid from afar. Undercover mafioso knew when to be scarce. "I d-didn't... didn't mean too..."
Sorry for the long wait. School is a necessary evil. -w-;;baer_jagerDecember 13 2010, 23:25:49 UTC
The silence that followed was long. It felt even longer.
The truth was hard to digest. Ludwig didn't want to acknowledge it, but it wasn't like him to avoid it, either. But the sick, hopeless feeling was making coherent thought of any kind rather difficult. He needed room to think, that much he knew.
Ludwig carefully pushed his chair away from the table and stood slowly. "Thank-you," he whispered.
True facts =3=; Fin?loves_pastaDecember 23 2010, 19:41:07 UTC
Feliciano stood quickly, hand at his sides and glass teetering from the sudden force he'd used to push his chair from the table. Ludwig was already starting to walk away when he took an uncertain step forward, paused and took another.
" I-I'm sorry," he whispered nervously. All he could think was that this was the end, that Ludwig was going to going to grab his stuff and just leave forever. His heart broke into a million pieces as it dropped into his stomach, followed by swallowed sobs.
After a moment of teetering he dropped back down into his seat and hunched over, head pressed to his knees. "For-forgive me... I'm so-orry, so s-sorry..."
