When Mei read Kim's comment on her blog, she promised to pry herself away from the computer in ten minutes. Ten minutes later, Mei's face was practically glued to the screen with a crumbled tissue in her fist as she read the long-awaited final chapter of a D. Gray-man's fanfiction. By the time she was finished with the last sentence, Mei was bawling like a little baby who was taken away from her mother at birth. She wiped her eyes, successfully smearing her eyeliner and mascara, and sniffled with her hand over her chest. She quickly typed a long review of gratitude and awe for the writer and clicked Submit ( ... )

Oh boy... Not Mei's Grandmother. Kim could barely even speak before the old woman spoke. In Mandarin. Sure, Kim respected their language, but it was just too hard for her to learn, and she honestly didn't want to. Mei had been her best friend since they were ten years old, and they'd never learned each other's languages. Which they were completely ok with.

Kim felt that as long as people didn't wanna learn her language, why learn theirs?

The door was almost slammed shut before she put a hand on it, and spoke. In English. The temptation to speak in Vietnamese was there, but she stopped herself for now.

" Sorry, but I promised Mei I'd come over today." she said, giving the ol woman a challenging look. Mui-Ting was a charming old lady, but a pain in the ass sometimes.

Once again, it was not that Grandmamma Mui-Ting did not like Kim; she really just didn't like people in her house. They were always loud and annoying and obnoxious and giggling and got in the way of her old Chinese opera. When Kim stuck her hand through the door gap, Mui-Ting regretted not pulling the door close as hard as she could to break the Vietnamese girl's hand off.

"Mei changing in room," she said in broken English.

Mui-Ting had been in the States long enough to understand English even though she couldn't realy speak it herself. She snarled at Kim and backed up. It almost looked like she wanted to whack Kim with her cane. She left the door open and retreated back to her spot on the couch. She picked up the remote control and turned up the volume, already anticipating that the young women would be loud.

"妹妹," Mui-Ting hollered, "您的朋友來啊. 粗魯那個."

Mui-Ting sat back in her chair then and stared at Kim's direction.

Kim knew the woman didn't like people in her house. But one, she wasn't a loud and giddy high school girl who had to speak loudly every chance she got, and two, she was Mei's best friend since elementary school. The old woman should learn to accept that soon. Preferably before it was time to put her in the grave.

She sighed a bit, took her shoes off and went upstairs, looking for Mei and ignoring the old woman's cold stare.
" Mei?" she called softly, before finding the girl in the bathroom.
"...... Are you kidding me?" she said, seeing the girl freshen up.
