Back to translating dainas... I tend to be drawn toward the odd and mystical ones, but there are thousands of them that are much more *down to earth*, shall we say. Here are a couple of rough translations:
Oh god, what shall I do,
I have sung all my songs.
I know, I'll take an old bachelor
And ride till I find some new ones.
Oh lord, o lord,
I had nine husbands.
Three I shot, three I hung,
and three I tossed out, penniless.
Hee! (And yes, a large percentage of the poems are from a female point of view.)
