Today is a happy day. As such, here is my list of things I love about living in New York.

1. Walking up Morningside after dark and looking out over the park at all the lights and tall buildings and the bridge way off in the distance.

2. Understanding and even expecting the insane antics of the 1 train - I didn't even bat an eye when it ran express from 96th to 145th, meaning I had to switch to a downtown train in order to get to 116th. (And yes, okay, on non-happy days this is a pain in the ass. But today it is happy.)

3. Watching movies set in NYC and getting all warm and fuzzy when they show Columbus Circle and Central Park and then talk about 116th and Broadway (*ahem* Enchanted).

4. Talking to strangers. No, really. I was in the Barnes & Noble poetry section yesterday, and this middle-aged man walked past, touched my arm, and asked what I was looking for. I did the whole *nervous laugh, look away from random crazy person* thing, and he was like, "No, seriously. I have eight books published and I teach poetry at NYU. What are you looking for?" So I said, "Something new." And then he walked me through the whole section, pulled out books by his favorite poets, gave me his website address, and left. It was sort of awesome. (And he's for real; I googled.)

5. ...Seeing Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters perform together on the same stage with costumed performers from nearly every Broadway show - for free. Seriously. I was going to make it through this entire post without talking about famous people, but I just couldn't handle it. The Broadway's Back concert was possibly the best thing ever, because how often does a person get to see Stephanie J Block, Kerry Butler, Lea Michele, and ANGELA LANSBURY sing together? Also, Bernadette Peters is tiny. And remarkably attractive.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled Friday afternoon. I'll be over here watching Battlestar Galactica and occasionally jumping up and down.
