This crochet project is cursed! It has to be. This is no other explanation.
Okay, here's the latest. I'm working on a hat. Not too complicated. A crown, a little mesh work around the middle of the down section, followed by a slightly larger brim. All in cotton yarn so that hopefully it'll be cooler for the summer and able to keep the sun off the top of my head. I swear it's not that complicated a design.
ETA: Here's a picture of what the hat is supposed to look like.
Link to photo After the third attempt, I was finally able to get the hat to a size that would fit my head. It's a little snug, but that's better than being 3 times too large. I just started the increasing for the brim. Now unless I've totally misunderstood everything I've learned about increasing and stitch count, there is no way. No way whatsoever that the stitch pattern for the brim increase round yields the stitch count listed for the round. It's simply not mathematically possible. I've drawn each and every stitch, added each increase where it's supposed to go, counted the total, and it DOES NOT YIELD THE TOTAL PRINTED! I am so annoyed. Can you tell?
Worse, I can't tell what was the number they were intending to increase the brim by. Is the pattern right and the stitch count wrong? Is the pattern wrong and the stitch count right? Is neither right? I finally decided screw the pattern and the stitch count. They're both likely wrong. So I picked a number to increase that I think makes sense and started working out my own blessed pattern. It's all on paper at this point. I don't have time left in the day to actually crochet it out. Will it work? Who knows. I do know one thing though. Unless it's so horribly screwed up as to destroy the hat (in which case, I'll just lose the brim altogether), it's going to be how I finish the brim whether or not it's "right". I'm about over this project.
