Last winter, I considered crocheting a pair of fingerless mittens but decided I wasn't experienced enough to make a pair. This fall, the idea crossed my mind again. I think I'm ready now.
Ravelry has over 300 free patterns for crocheted fingerless mittens. But not one of them satisfied me. The warm solid ones were too plain-looking. The lace work ones were too open to be warm. This week, I learned about the seed stitch. While playing with it, I decided the seed stitch was a nice mix of solid warm and visually interesting texture and might make a good fabric.
So I tried it on fingerless mittens of my own design. After about 6 or 7 design changes, I finally came up with these.
This is a close-up of the stitching. (The lighting made the color look wonky.)
I really like the fabric that the seed stitch produces. It's also a fast stitch pattern to make. I may see if I can use it for other projects.
I can't tell you yet how long it takes to make a pair. My guess is that it takes about 2 hours per mitten, so 4 hours for the project total. I didn't track my time though. So I can't really say for sure.
